about business model

Angry Joe even had TotalBiscuit in the comments section of that video correcting him and other people.

Some other stats. Given 15 cases, what’s the chance of getting at least one card better than iron ? (Bronze cards are just as good as cobalt as far as gameplay advantage is concerned)

probability of success = 1 - (0.8 bronze + 0.15 iron) = 0.05
trials = 15
successes: 1 or more

53%. That’s 36% to get one bronze+, and 17% for getting two or more.

How about 20 cases ?
64%. That’s 37% to get one bronze+, and 26% for getting two or more. If the number doesn’t add up exactly, it’s because the calculator uses decimal fractions instead of simple fractions.

yes and devs don’t get money, game doesn’t get supported and eventually it gets shut down. i think nobody wants this. i want the game to be successful. i want it to earn lots of money.

but people are extremely skeptical when it comes to free2play. the main demographic that will play this game probably doesn’t even care about accurate information. they’ll look at that angryjoe video and take it as proof. they don’t care that it’s just a recorded stream. they don’t care that there has been no research put into it. they probably don’t even care that angryjoe just acts to fulfill his role as being “angry”. they probably think that’s actually how he is. well, if he actually is like that, he’s a real dip****. but i don’t think so. he can put up videos that are well thought through. this video is absolutely not but it still displays some issues with the business model. at least i would consider it as feedback for the gui team to communicate information about cases better. what are your chances, what do you get, what can you do with it, can you get it through other means…? i haven’t looked into the whole thing. i just scrapped the surface. maybe if the game is unable to describe you how the merc/card system works, some things have to get improved.

again, i want to underline that i don’t think much of that video. it’s a real poor display of what angryjoe usually does. it potentially damages the game and if i would be in charge i would think about pulling it down for spreading misinformation. for example, his claim that the last pack you open will contain a cobalt (what’s the highest quality color?) card but actually it’s all random (hopefully). but this will result in another angry rant and we all know how this will look like.

yes, that’s good. angryjoe actually responded to his own video and stated that the game is technically not pay2win but the rng model still basically stinks and unlocks take too long/are too expensive. i would agree with the rng part and i think the merc prices are too high but i don’t care much for the card unlocks. i’m ok if you have to put some effort into it. but if i pay for stuff, i want to get specific stuff, not random stuff.
Using that simplistic chart on a binary p2w state, we would find Dirty Bomb is p2w, would we not?

Personally, I don’t think a label of “pay-to-win” is binary. If there’s a cash shop for things which can alter the outcome of a game, you’ve got to make a somewhat subjective assessment of how much alteration is acceptable. For instance, a team of skyhammers and auras won’t beat a team with access to engineers and soldiers, all other things being equal. If there’s a grind alt route, you have to assess how much grind is reasonable.

Regarding the stupid video, yes, it’s quite irritating when someone in a position of influence is spreading misinformation. At least he isn’t in politics.
I’ve grinded 600-1000h on some F2P games. I think DB is very reasonable. Combine that with the near-constant rate of Merc starter packs & beta access codes by Nexon, Warchest, Splash Damage, Alienware, Twitch&various streams. I find integrity in the current monetization model.

Binary? If you want to go that way:
GNU GPL version 3/Open-Source, DOTA2/LoL and Unreal Engine 4, the modding community (depends) is F2P.
99.9percentile of the advertised, nowadays F2P market is not F2P.

And no I don’t buy the argument that you need millions of players to achieve the success with this monetization method;

 1. People are really starting to get irked by the market
 2. You only need a few dedicated developers/artists churning out content. Look at us dedicated ET players supporting DB, I don’t think it’s an issue.
 3. More people will pick up because they find it integer, honest or are intrigued and best of all: greed.
 4. It’s not nearly as difficult as people think. Hats are easy to make.

I guess I should reword it as F2P, to me, means involving both player and developer.

Yes, you can buy a merc for money which is an advantage. Does it break the game though? No. I kill all mercs with all mercs.

P2W:
http://game-wisdom.com/critical/defining-pay-to-win

Paying for more content (because you loved the standalone F2P) =/ paying for making content go faster.
I don’t mind if the game implents F2P methods to acquire all said “conveniences” but if not then it is Pay to Win. Seeing how you can pay over a user for something he can’t acquire. I’m looking at boosters and elite cases. It’s a very thin line (which is being crossed)

My argument really comes down to the fact that we seem to define pay to win in regards to asinine things. Unless it negatively affects gameplay, it isn’t really a “pay to win” scenario or as a synonym DB is “Justified F2P”

Internode (I have a connection with Internode) put this up today:

and being a very hardcore-gamer-centric ISP down here in oz, their reviews/articles are generally given a decent amount of credit by those that follow Games.On.Net. They have had an overall positive/optimistic opinion of DB from the start too.
