Side Note: For anyone who played Metal Gear Online, I’m essentially ripping of the Survival game mode. Also, this should be implemented after the bugs and such get worked out as it is not as important.
The way this would work is that first you and lets say 4 other people would form a 5 person team. (The team size is just a guess at what would be best for competitive Brink). Joining a team could be done the same way PC players join a server, and there could be an auto matching system as well. Once the team is formed, they are then matched against another team on a random map. They would play the map twice, and both teams would play the resistance once and the security once. This is stopwatch mode right?
The team that won the fastest would then be awarded lets say 100 points. The losers get a consolation prize of 50 points. The winning team is then immediately put back in the queue to be matched against another team while the losers can kick people off the team, leave the team, discuss strategy, or re queue right away. If the winning team won again and beat their second opponent, they would get 200 points instead of 100 then 300 if they won 3 in a row. This could go on until say 5 matches. After winning 5 in a row, they would stop being put back in the queue right away. They could then take a break, kick someone out, or go right back into it. However, if they won again, they would only get 100 and the cycle would repeat. This way, the really good teams would still get a lot of points, but they wouldn’t get too much to devalue the points (more on that later).
Example: Team Walrus manages to win three rounds in a row. They lose the fourth against Team Moo. Team Walrus would get 650 points (100+ 200+ 300+ 50). Team Moo manages to win five straight. They would get 1500 points (100+ 200+ 300+ 400+ 500).
Now for what the points are for. One of Brink’s big features is character customization. You can spend these points on certain locked pieces of clothing that are not normally attainable. For example, you could unlock big clown shoes for the resistance for 5k points. This would require Splash Damage to continually make new outfits though.
This game mode should not always be available. If it is, anyone can just grind out the points needed. Also, Brink may not keep a very large player base, so there might not be too many teams at certain times of the day. Metal Gear Online did not have a very large community. I don’t know if I ever saw more than 3000 people on at the same time. In order to make it so there were always plenty of teams, Konami made Survival only available three nights a week for about four hours. This made it really intense since every game matters.
How does this make Brink better? It gives people something to work towards after they are max level and completed the challenges through getting new outfits. It encourages team work even more. Since every game played in Survival is so valuable, especially when going for a fifth straight win, people want to win and get those points. The most selfish player knows that in order to get what he wants, a new outfit, he has to help his team to win. If the player base dwindles, having Survival on certain nights lets people know when a lot of other people will be on. Survival nights in MGO always had way more people on than on any other night. Brink seems to be made to be competitive, and Survival lets everyone experience that competitive play instead of just random matches. Most importantly, its just fun. Some of my fondest video game memories were made during Survival. It really provides an intense experience. When my team won its first 5 game streak, we were going crazy. Thanks for reading this far!
