A warning from a different era. - (TF2 rant - Don't let Splash damage repeat Valve's mistake.)

(Naonna) #1

TL:DR - go read the last paragraph.

I come from another game - A very old game. TF2 has reached the end of its long life, for me. - (Not for the try-hards of upper comp: it's still kinda alive for them - minus configs or the ability to optimize the game's running speed or the ability to change weapon view models to not cover 1/3 of the screen...) - I speak for the casual, worthless player. (Even if I do alright in lobbies. Not the point.)

When casual mode has levels in a game that's been successful for over ten years, it's a bad sign for the everyday player who just wants to unwind after a day of work.

TF2 has, as of this post, removed ALL public games (with the drop-in and drop-out feature) and valve servers not related to competitive. Valve has implemented a 'casual' version of competitive with massive wait times as they 'attempt to pair you' - which may or may not work, based on the stress their servers are under. Upon finding a game, if you have the patience to wait an hour, there is no way to kick hackers due to vote-kicking being disabled. If there is a team imbalance such as a 12 vs 4, there's no auto-balance.

(Also, demo-knight got nerfed.)

The real point of this post is to show what happens when a game pushes competitive SUPER hard to the point of alienating their major player base. Valve wanted tf2 to suddenly be as 'competitive' as Overwatch. (Given that Overwatch is a disorganized mess at times, given player latency and projectiles.... sure. call it competitive.)

While community-run servers are still up, it doesn't replace a pub experience. Unlike Dirty Bomb, custom servers in tf2 can have any number of mods or maps - be it Pony maps or just trade servers. Without a way to play the game (minus a massive wait time,) many players feel lost. - Sure you could go to Valve's 'casual' mode which has statistics to discourage fun and encourage try-harding in pubs - eliminating all personality from the players who once conga'd, spycrab'd, and did stupid stuff. Maybe it wasn't productive, but it was fun.

All in all, SD, please don't become Valve. Let your game gain players due to how fun the game play is - not how competitive it wants to be. I play Dirty Bomb for the fun of a pub setting. Rhino rush can work. Even proxy rush can work. When some people don't push the objective, or there's not coordination, it doesn't make the game less fun to play, for me. (I'm aware, there are level 80 players with thousands of hours who may disagree. go to comp, you guys.) I'm sure some of you down there below this post will disagree with me about playing a game for stupid fun instead of hard competition.

Feel free to explain why I’m wrong, down below.

A moment of silence for my 1234-ish hours of tf2.

It sucks to be disappointed.) - Quote by not-me.

I’m aware this post seems complain-y. I’ll go back to being critical of people’s ideas and balance changes later on. Don’t worry.

Forced matchmaking?

What is it with developers and their obsession with matchmaking these days?! I left console gaming for THIS?!

(Naonna) #4

Don’t worry. we got 929 new voice lines ‘-’ … wish I could play the game to hear them.

(BananaSlug) #5

that is why sd is going to leave server browser

(AnonOmis1000) #6

…what?

(Naonna) #7

@AnonOmis1000 Basically, just reminding Splash Damage that trying too hard to push competitive mode could result in problems, if only part of the community wants it - especially since we can’t host our own dedicated servers. If pubs disappeared in THIS game, like in tf2, the game would die.

… Also, the post was a way for me to vent my frustration.

Pubs didn’t disappear in TF2, and that game isn’t dead.

(Naonna) #9

Have you tried to play the game since the meet your match update?

(AnonOmis1000) #10

It’s been, what, 3 days? Give it some fucking time.

(Naonna) #11

Oki! ~ I’ll see ya back here in 2 weeks, where I can reiterate my statement.

(Naonna) #12

It’s been 2 weeks. I stand by my statement.

The only real change, outside of further hackers, which valve has been addressing, is that community servers are starting to pick up the slack. - When the servers aren’t MLP or x10 or idle/trade servers…

Joining a game via their ‘casual’ mode results in a very non-friendly setting, which was a major part of the fun of tf2 for me. The addition of a k/d ratio has been not-wonderful for the cartoon-y spirit of the game. (Clashing even more than the implementation of the banana hat.) - At least joining a game this way has gotten better on the wait times.

Really, this post was just to point out that I was right, overall. Some things got better - just not the key points that I felt were important.

Sorry for bumping but it’s big news.

TF2 is unplayable:
[spoiler]

You sure you wanna give CMM to DB, SD?

(Naonna) #14

I suppose this gives me time to try and get good at Dirty Bomb, now.

(Dr_Plantboss) #15

Except that there’s no reason to play it anymore…

I play it for the gameplay.

Sure, after I’ve collected all the loadout sets, there’ll be nothing to spend credits on (I honestly wouldn’t spend all these credits for some silly skins) til new merc drops out. But least I have a good time killer, since no other other shooter impress me. (Enemy Territory Wolfenstein is m alternative to DB, in case it runs out of population to play with.)

(Naonna) #17

I used to play tf2 for the love of the game and the antics that showed up - much like Dirty Bomb. I don’t do it for shiny skins or hats or ranks. It befuddles me that people suddenly lose or gain devotion to a gain based on a nearly-meaningless exp bar which just shows play time.

For some of you more hardcore gamers, can you explain this fascination to me?

playtime = skill.

you would think a guy is a noob sooner when he is using a lead loadout than when he is using a cobalt one.

I know that DB was marketed from the beginning as a competitive game, like Overwatch was. Overwatch is doing rather well in spite of the fact that its casual base doesn’t have a lot of material to work with, Mei (among others) being overpowered to some people in pubs, and the big old “Q of the game” being a thing.

valve did the mistake of trying to go for comp tf2 was never meant to be an objectve based most of people try get kill or fun mostly cause if you look you will find that rare are the people that go for the objective in payload
