A slew of votes, for the sake of an ACCURATE tier list

So, in a typical 5v5 game, you have 5 key roles

Slayer/Pocket Merc - Fragger
Medic - Sawbonez
Backup Medic - Sparks, Phoneix, or Aura
Support - These can be anything from Skyhammer to Bushwacka, depends on the map and the situation
Support 2 - same as above, but if you have an engi, you don’t need another, and vice versa

So, with all that said, let’s figure out an ACCURATE tier list. Because here is the reality of things, for one, people seem to think that because of Sawbonez and Fragger’s roles, that they’re op. No, not really, it’s just how 5v5 works, it’s Dirty Bomb compressed into the bare bones of what you need. By that logic Demoman and Medic in TF2 are op, but they’re not, they just have a specific job to fill in their team’s composition.

So, the other 3 roles are a little more flexible and can be changed based on what people need.

So, answer the following.

Which Medic would you pick from those 3?

And what are the top 3 mercs you’d pick from those 2 remaining positions?

(Cryoni) #2

Aura for backup med and rhino as support 2.

Sparks, ranged revives are still broken because people have to gib and she still doubles as a sniper

And what are the top 3 mercs you’d pick from those 2 remaining positions?

Arty, Nader, Fletcher in no particular order.

(Ballto) #4

Best teams for 5v5 in no particular order (assuming theyre not eating paint chips)

Attack:
Phoenix
Fletcher
Nader
Stoker (maybe kira on maps like chapel)
Sporks

Defence:
Aura
Arty if its an EV, stoker if not EV
Phoenix
Proxy/Fletcher depending on the map
Rhino, Bushwhaker, or Fragger

(neverplayseriou) #5

Aura on defense, phoenix or sparks on offense depending on playstyle.

Support, stoker or sky

You’d have to make this list per map/per side/per area for it to not be too generic.

(TheVulpesFox) #7

Either aura or Phoenix
Arty or stoker
Fragger or Nader
Bushwacker or Fletcher

Depends on the map, what side, how I feel and my missions.

First and Second slot : Sawbonez and Fragger. Those will unlikely move away.

Backup Medic would always be Sparks IMO. On defense, it might be interesting to switch Sawbonez for Aura, or just pick Aura as backup directly…

I’d pick Fletcher as an engineer on Underground, Terminal, Trainyard second OBJ. For everything else, I’d pick Bushwhacker. I think it might be interesting to pick Bushwhacker over Fletcher for Terminal second OBJ.

Last slot would be a fire support. Stoker on Underground and maybe Terminal, Skyhammer or Arty on everything else.

If no engineer is needed, I’d replace with something else depending of the map and the side.

Bridge defense :

  • Nader on first obj.
  • Quick switch to an engineer for the side objective time. Then switch to Red Eye.
  • Nader or Stoker for the 3rd obj. Rhino can be interesting too.

Bridge attack 3rd obj :

  • Nader.

Chapel defense :

  • Nader for first obj.
  • Keeping Nader for second obj. Eventually switching to Red Eye or picking another fire support following the situation.
  • Red Eye.

Chapel attack 3rd obj :

  • Kira. Seriously, I don’t see a better merc to flush the third objective efficiently.

Trainyard 3rd obj :

  • Attack : Kira again or Nader. I oftenly saw Kira flushing the 3rd objective kinda nicely on Trainyard.
  • Defense : Nader or Red Eye. Can’t decide myself.

Only exception is Dome 1st objective, because those side objectives feels pretty important. I’d pick Bushwhacker for both sides.

I also heard that some people in defense were playing Red Eye on Trainyard 1st obj, and it was ridiculously powerful.

Depending on the style of play.

Attack

Back up medic - Phoenix
Top 3 - Red Eye, Stoker, Fletcher

Defense

Back up medic - Aura
Top 3 - Red Eye, Arty, Bushwhacker

Just to add to this, Nader is also critical on second stage attack (bridge) if you don’t prevent the enemy from repairing the gen.

I wonder if it’s interesting to start to destroy the generator with Stoker, then switch to Nader right after the flames stopped in order to finish the job. Maybe it allows you to do the job slightly more quickly in theory.

Potentially, even better if you have a stoker and Fletcher on your team who are also damaging the generator, you can take the generator down so quickly. I’ve also seen this done on first stage of underground to open up one of the doors early on and get a plant on the first spawn wave (the strongest spawn wave).

Another strat is kira combined with arty destroying gen on 2nd stage of trainyard.
