A Short Op-Ed On Some Brink Complaints

(Vaporman) #1

Linsolv has posted a short editorial with some opinions on a few of the complaints being tossed about within the Brink community.

It’s down there VVVV

Answering Various Complaints about Brink
It has recently come to my attention that other Brink forums exist, and that unlike our happy little world of only minor complaints, they’re whiny as sin.

They’ve got a ton of complaints, and if you want to hear my thoughts as they develop, you can go to the SplashDamage forum—they tend to get all the same stuff as the Bethsoft forum, but I like them (slightly) better and I didn’t really want to have THREE forums open 5-10 hours a day. :stuck_out_tongue:

Glowing Enemies

The enemy glowing simply serves to set them apart from the background. It’s for people who can’t easily distinguish a tan-skinned guy from a light-brown wall. If that’s really a problem, maybe you’re just bigoted against people with glasses or something? Either way, it’s a togglable option.

Long Story Short: quit whining, folks. It’s not going to ruin the game. It just helps you see better.

Heavies vs. Lights

There’s a rather active thread saying that “lights have a higher skill cieling than heavies.” Essentially, an “average” Heavy = an “average” Light. However, the learning curve is shallower and shorter for Heavies: a poor Heavy > a poor Light, and a great Light > a great Heavy.

I can’t prove it, but this is absurd. Let’s compare, using math:

I’ve been playing a ton of BC2 lately, trying to really get into Rush. I think I’ve gotten to the point where I actually prefer it to SqDM, which is no mean feat. In general, if there is no defense in an area, then the attackers win, even though it’s not a DeathMatch game type. If two groups are fighting, then if DPS of group 1 > DPS of group 2, group 2 will eventually be so killed that they simply can’t be there for the 7 seconds or whatever it takes to plant.

For a given team, DPS is equal to the sum of all the individual players’ DPS.

For a Light, the DPS is lower because their weapons are less effective. For a Light, the DPS is lower because you have to play that Mohammad Ali style of never getting hit, always dancing around and avoiding the enemy’s bullets, meaning DPS is not sustained.

For a Heavy, the DPS is higher because they have bigger guns and can take a hit. However, they also have considerably more access to grenades (not hand-grenades, but launched grenades). This allows them to significantly cut enemy DPS for some period of time, as a grenade, even launched, is an automatic knockdown when it hits.

However, when a player dies (that is to say, they are not revived by a medic) they are subjected to a brief wait (up to 20 seconds depending on the wave timer) and then have to run back. A Light at the respawn point will take considerably less time to get back in the action than a Heavy.

What this means is that for a Heavy to be viable, they have to be able to not die, since their presence on the front lines is both an incredible boon and losing it subjects the team to an immense loss.

Long Story Short: Heavies are not an acceptable loss, where a Light is an acceptable loss even with only the barest damage done. How this will affect their use on the competitive scene (public matches, I assume people to use what they want instead of what’s best—Lord knows I plan to) remains to be seen, but playing a Heavy is going to be anything but simplistic.

Console-itis

There is nothing you can do to convince PC players that the game is gonna be good on PC. They want you to convince them, but they don’t actually want to listen to any of your points, never mind the fact that we don’t know any more than they do.

Long Story Short: Shut up, PC players. We’ll see in a couple months. There’s nothing any of us can do to make you feel better, and nothing any of us can do to fix it if things are not perfect in the end besides.

Hmm. I’ll comment. I’m gonna disregard any further “articles” from the brink forums as they are just usually merely opinions that apparently aren’t popular over here. My opinions aren’t populars amongst the bulk of the board population but that doesn’t keep me from voicing my opinion consistently and openly.

I also copy pasted it so we could discuss it here as there’s obviously no activity on your thread yet and everyone’s obviously already signed up over here.

Edit: Although there’s nothing to discuss. It’s just one gamer’s opinion stating that the people that post on the developer boards complain too much. And you posted a link to it on the developer boards. Smart thinking right there.

Whatever floats your boat man.

Yup. That’s kinda what an Op-Ed is. Your a regular Sherlock Holmes. pats Jess Alon gently on the head

Lovely tags.

It’s a bit ridiculous to use an article complaining about the posters on THESE forums to get people to check out your forums is it not? That’s a little bit back handed. I think that a lot of people on this forum are very friendly towards you. And the article basically says that all PC players think the game is going to suck completely and they will never be satisfied.

Shadowcat who is one of the most respectful and helpful posters I’ve ever known is a PC user. Nail who is friendly unless you’re an utter retard is a PC user. I’ve named two people already who don’t sit around and bitch about what they think brink is going to be.

That “editorial” is downright immature and the purpose of you posting it is to get the “downtrodden” console users who are sick of arguing with the terrible hateful PC users to leave and go to your site.

I think that intelligent people that use both consoles and PCs should be able to discuss things on this forum in a civilized way. I admit. I’m a total ass about my opinion and I should do better. But I try not to be underhanded about it.

You really need to come back to mock me didn’t you? Because that will win me over.

Mods can feel free to lock and delete this thread. I was not aware it would give people cardiac arrest. Link removed.

(Linsolv) #9

That’s okay, Jess. I don’t usually agree with you either.

That said, I was kinda in a bad place when I wrote that. I was sitting there thinking about how my dad’s sick and that I needed to write something. Out comes me, bitching and moaning.

Honestly, I like 90% of threads here. I just don’t like whiners. Which is a little hypocritical I guess.

That’s fine man. But it doesn’t bode well for the integrity of your forums.

(Linsolv) #11

You’d rather I lied to you? Jess, Jess, Jess. Don’t you know that the whole reason I post here instead of Bethsoft is that people here are less insincere? And besides that, I posted it on my own. Not like anyone tells me what I should post. If you want to put someone down and think their opinions and integrity are stupid, blame me.

(Jess Alon) #12

No no. That’s not what I’m saying. You could have just written that “editorial” more thoughtfully and more objectively. I like it here because you can say it like it is without getting smacked by the ban hammer. Whenever you’re going to post something HERE with a link to YOUR forums. Keep in mind it’s going to represent what the population here thinks of your forum. If they respect what they read they might come over. But only a small minority of people that post here with agree with the way you wrote that article.

I agree with a lot of the points you made.

I’m more so outraged because I don’t want to see you guys whore your site out. And if that’s not what you’re doing I don’t want to see you do things that give people the distinct impression that you are. I signed up on there in case there was anything to talk about on there. But honestly these boards keep me so busy I never have time to go over there and check.

I’m not just hating on you guys. I just think you so think about how something looks before you do it especially if it comes down to you coming here and asking us to come over there.

If I came to your house. And told you to come over to my house… and you got up and came over to my house and I told you your house sucked. That’d be terrible. I’d say then don’t come to my house. And don’t invite me over to yours. Douche.

That’s all.

(Vaporman) #13

No. Neither are any more stupid than anyone else here or any other forum. You just put into words what some would like to, but fear flaming.

Sure, it could have been more delicate. But it wasn’t meant for THIS forum. There we know you are not some pc hating aura activist. And that is my fault. In my haste to show you appreciation for the work you put in over there, I post your articles here so that everyone gets a chance to see what you’ve got to say, and what the folks over there have to say as well. Though with a limited number of members it takes time to build up responses, so I should have waited longer.

That said, there is a simple solution for those who find posting links, to other sites DESIGNED AND RUN to help the very game that is being discussed succeed and flourish, distasteful. . . don’t click, move on.

(Linsolv) #14

It’d be more like if you came over to my house, told me to go to your house, then when we got there you told me by sister was a b*tch. But close enough.

I agree that to a certain extent it is site whoring. I’ll talk to the boss about that, because he wants the forum to succeed but at the same time there are certain things that are inappropriate in the way he does it I think.

Long story short: Thanks for the criticism, we’ll look into those things. As for the (unintentional, it seems) slight, I accept your apology and I’d like to issue one of my own to every person who is either concerned and says nothing, or doesn’t even go into the “concerns” threads. You’re a better man (or woman) than I.

I don’t want the work you put in to be viewed as a tool for site whoring. I’m open to whatever you would rather do my friend.

(tokamak) #17

Guys can’t you take it somewhere private … Like your forum?

(jRAD) #18

Thread…solved? I guess?
