The Crotzni and KEK-10 are the close-quarters high-DPS SMGs.
The Hochfir is fast firing and is very accurate, but has poor DPS.
The Blishlok is suited towards long range due to its slow firerate and long reload.
The SMG-9 is a slower-firing Crotzni with marginally more accuracy.
Common sense says that the Crotz and the SMG-9 should have a similar arrangement to the Timik-47 and the M4A1 (in an ideal world at least), where the Crotzni is a CQC spray-and-pray weapon whereas the SMG-9 is accurate and effective at range. But the Blishlok is already good at range, and the SMG-9 loses lots of damage over range, making it unsuitable for ranged combat.
So we’ve got close quarters SMGs, a long range SMG, and a laser accurate SMG. What niche could the SMG-9 fit into?
Why, MAGAZINE SIZE OF COURSE! I propose that the SMG-9 be given a drum magazine similar to a Thompson, with somewhere between 75 and 100 rounds, and have its reload lengthened a significant amount.
This would give it a niche in supportive, suppressive fire, as well as being good in long drawn-out firefights.
This also makes sense for the mercs who have access to the SMG-9 - Sawbonez and Bushwhacker are quite defensive, support-oriented mercs, and Nader is good for area denial. A large magazine fits these roles well.
Additionally, this makes sense from an aesthetic standpoint. The SMG-9 is some kind of weird, custom-modded, not-actually-a-real-gun gun, unlike all the other weapons which are just real guns with stupid names. If it’s just a gun whacked together from whatever Bushwhacker found in his basement, it having a custom drum magazine would be more believable than an AKS-74U having one.
