really agonizing these past few days trying to get it together thou :???:
a little help with pk3 please
sadly i read that and dont get it because i dont know how/where to get a .arena file or a .gsc file… or how to structure the images still heh any help on those would be greatly appreciated
Dunno how much of it you understand, but its much simpler than most think.

This is how the structure of the .zip file is done. Looking at it from windows-explorer view.
All folders u see above are created by hand, rightclick anywhere and select “new folder” and naming it like above.
Bests way to get the hang of how files are done is to open an existing pk3 file and look inside it.
If you dont have winzip installed i suggest you go get that, http://www.winzip.com.
After installing winzip open up “windows explorer” shortcut “windows button+e” or normally found under accessories.
Inside that go to “Tools” then “Folder Options”.
Under the option “File Types” click “new” in the popup window that folows enter “pk3” without the “”. Click “OK”.
Now u have the file extension pk3 selected, click “change”, select “Winzip” from the programs in the list and click ok. Click “Apply” and close the window.
Now u can open any .pk3 file with winzip.
So just copy an exististing file to your desktop or any other location of your wishing.
Righclikc on the file and select “Winzip”…“Exctact to Folder …/pk3name”
After that u have a new folder with all the folders in it and the files.
The .arena files and the .objdata files can be opened with notepad. Open Notepad and browse for the files u want to open, look inside that files and then u will understand how the files work. If not…use the “Search” button in this forum.
Very nice Drakir. I’ve only put together pk3’s for RTCW, but what I do is use a blank hard drive partition for staging all the required folders. This way, I can just click the button “save full path info” in WinZip.
I used that method too when creating campaign-pk3’s, now I’ve gone lazy and just open the files in WinXP’s Explorer and add new files/folders directly from there
if you are running windows xp you can just create your folder structure then rightclick and choose send to compressed folder
it is a zip file and you can then change the extension to pk3
to create a .areana file do it in notepad, and save as “crappymap.ARENA” and you MUST keep it in the speech marks otherwise it will just save a a .txt file!
