A Lack of Guides

(nephandys) #1

So one thing I notice this forum/game is lacking compared to other similar titles is guides for classes and levels. Every day I see threads pop up asking for advice for a certain class or issue. Why not develop guides that answer these questions before they’re even asked?

With this game there is probably not going to be one person’s all encompassing guide to each side/level and each class, but a lot of valuable info could be contained within. Developing these would be a huge help to any new player just getting into the game and might spare them getting spawn camped or having no clue what to do despite having played campaign/challenges or not. It would also consolidate a variety of tips scattered through tons of threads throughout the forum.

You might be saying to yourself, great idea Nephaerius, why don’t you just do this yourself? Well I just don’t have the time atm for a whole host of reasons. So I was hoping there might be other members of the community with more time on their hands that would be willing to develop and post these or that might already have some complete or in the works.

Edit: Depending on feedback and interest here if needed/wanted I will work on some guides eventually, but it will be a ways off (wedding in 3 wks, honeymoon, etc.).

Assuming that’s you getting married, and not just you stalking your friends while on their honeymoon, congratulations!

As for the guide, I think it would be a good idea to start out with a W:ET or ET:QW guide to get the basics. That is, “Play the objective.”, “Medics should heal/revive more than shoot.”, and tips on how to behave when disguised so the enemy doesn’t notice you.

Then, build on that with Brink-specific mechanics like SMART moves and combos and weapon/weapon mod/body type/class analysis. I can try throwing something together, just as a sort of bare-bones example of what I’m describing.

What do you think?

Here’s what I came up with as like a ten+ commandments for a new player.

Brink Guide: The Basics.

[ul]
[li]Step 2: Do challenges first all the way to two stars at least. Special Tip. Parkour This is a great way to level up and learn the light body type. Try to get a crazy time like less than 50 seconds. Then keep trying to lower this mark and also try to score points with trick jumps. (I got to top 200 players on the leaderboard by just playing Parkour This) And found you could level up and get Exp by doing this challenge.[/li][/ul]

[ul]
[li]Step 2 & Half: Choose Private game Freeplay. Set match settings to 1. Explore each map by yourself practicing moves especially with Light Body Type. Switch sides. Repeat. After doing all challenges you should be able to unlock Light Body Type.[/li][/ul]

[ul]
[li]Step 3: Make a friend by doing all of the following: Join forums. Play campaign with main goal to make friend who plays Brink.[/li][/ul]

[ul]
[li]Step 4: Choose a class and try it out. Play campaign on normal with friend. Ask questions.[/li][/ul]

[ul]
[li]Step 5: Try out Heavy. Then Try out Light Body Type.[/li][/ul]

[ul]
[li]Step 6: Play campaign through on normal with friend or online settings so that anyone can join. Try all weapons.[/li][/ul]

[ul]
[li]Step 7: Add Brink players to your friends list. The Team aspect requires some familiarity to be fully enjoyed. Think of it as a club you belong to.[/li][/ul]

[ul]
[li]Step 8: Try Hard Mode Campaign once you feel more comfortable.[/li][/ul]

[ul]
[li]Step 9: Try Freeplay Small Teams to get your feet wet with versus.[/li][/ul]

[ul]
[li]Step 10: You should nearly be level 20. First character ends up being a mistake and a result of learning curve. (Now you can continue to level 24)[/li][/ul]

[ul]
[li]Step 11: Respec character or start a new one.[/li][/ul]

[ul]
[li]Step 12: You die and lose a lot in Brink. All part of the learning. Easy to learn, hard to master. :)[/li][/ul]

Special Tip: Watch This after step 12: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0q14FZmfIo :D:cool:

Thanks for the congrats it’s definitely my wedding lol

I think general Brink guides are good. Extremely basic tips for general play are definitely a must. Things like taking firewall and upgrade CP regardless of your main class. Using CP’s to switch classes to help your team in a pinch (medic to rez for example).

I was also thinking more along the lines of things like Guide to Engineer - features turret/mine placements, ability choices, strategies for engies (do you buff everyone on your team, focus on defense, etc.), weapon choices, etc. These guides might vary from player and playstyle or they might contain several playstyle options for each class.
