A Few Gameplay Concerns

(SebaSOFT) #21

Agreed with INF3RN0, I’d also recommend to wipe out the forum on the release date. You know, to take out the garbage before all those “I toold you so” threads.

(AnthonyDa) #22

But wait, there can be “I toold you so” threads because it won’t happens, right ?

(Senethro) #23

My experience with forums is that those people who make the biggest noise about all the perceived problems of a game at this stage aren’t going to like the game anyway. Anyone remember General.Jung (he of Hello Forum,) and all the other names from the ETQW boards? Or JBRAA who played for 100s of hours then declared the game a failure?

The I Told You So threads are inevitable and the goalposts will be shifted so they can be made.

Still waiting on JBRAA’s video he promised of him burning his copy of Wolfenstein if it failed…

I think the crossfire effect got JBRAA and others with ET:QW, quite a few ET players I used to play with initially liked ET:QW, we all had laugh playing it but as more and more sheep jumped onto ‘failwagon’ on CF they suddenly decided it was crap game and stopped playing also. Sadly JBRAA took it way too far, poor chap.

Happened with Wolfenstein also way before it’s release and the leaked beta, I don’t think they could have done any right really with that game no matter what, worst mistake they made was calling it Wolfenstein though. I thought the MP was pretty enjoyable and with some fixes and tweaks could have been OK game, the changes they made were interesting and added to the gameplay but sadly undone by stupid things else where such as poor performance, single plant locations, 1 key/button for everything and so, oh well.

Back to SD, while ET:QW was by no means perfect and had its flaws it was pretty solid attempt for SD’s first ‘proper’ title, I’m sure they learned a lot of lessons from their time on that title which will rub off on Brink, I’m still not made my mind up whether or not the game as it stands is for me, just need some more details on this ‘hardcore’ mode (please give it nice name).

(Nail) #25

yea, call it “Wolken”

I’ve watched your progress since you joined our forums Chris, and I must say “props” to you. You’ve spent an inordinate time on mapping for W:ET and ET:QW and the results are outstanding. Thanks from www.enemy-territory.com

you deserve at least an easter egg

So that’s the hello forum guy. I was wondering why my sig had Hello forum on there, and it was because I was either making fun of him, or something else. I was trying to find out who the guy was who keeps on introducing his threads with “hello forum”.

I wonder if “they” will shut their mouths if they are challenged to make a game from scratch with only $5 and a dinky publisher.

That was surprisingly well put. I was freaking out on Bethesda forums, read this and cease to care whether or not balancing is an issue. Epiphany. Nice.

Also in response to this by Senethro “My experience with forums is that those people who make the biggest noise about all the perceived problems of a game at this stage aren’t going to like the game anyway.”:

It’s not my fault MW2 broke me heart! cries in fetal position Seriously though, that game sucks.

I guess I can sort of take relief in the fact that all the blockbuster video games (which this game (imo) will be) all had ground breaking originals, ie Halo, Gears of War and Modern Warfare. It’s only the sequels of games that tend to suck.

(signofzeta) #29

lol, the wolfenstein fans should have saw that coming.

Cheers,

I still remember asking what a ‘clan’ was on the chat box

Good to see it’s still going.

And the choices you make before you start playing. Might want to read full posts in the future. Your grow by extending your wardrobe of unlocks while the number of unlocks remains the same. That way the power of players is far, far more balanced than in ET where players simply kept adding to what they already had some unlocks even stacking.

Hm, don’t worry I guess that’ll be too much work on my part anyway.

This thread seems pointless, the developers have talked about most of these concerns and that hardcore players will have a ton of customizable options for servers I doubt it will be hard to find the type you want…And about numbers…It’s an SD game (So there’s a lot of “id” and SD backing) plus Bethesda back and the marketing on Gamestop and word of mouth and I’m sure as the game nears release it will become more advertised and maybe even have a TV Spot.

Plus I can’t imagine the game not being received well as it already looks amazing and is just now getting into hardcore development.

I also agree with others that most of your points are more personal preference and how you’ve been playing games for the past 15 years…

I’ve been gaming since 1990 (not uber long, but longer than most) and games have made a lot of changes over the years.

Games cost A LOT more than they used to, so (unfortunately) player base and accessibility matter more. When Arcades, Atari, Nintendo, and the like were producing 8-bit (or less) greatness it was a team of like 1-4 guys, lol. That’s not all games, just some… But now you’ve got teams of 300 all getting paid probably triple of what they used to in a market crowded by crappy games.

Thus, going with current gaming trends such as XP, regenerating health, FF Off, designated grenade buttons, iron sights, etc. Is all to bring in more players, more sales. It’s getting harder and harder for developers to make hits due to lack of money in the general economic market, let alone with higher production values and longer development times.

If this game only caters to gamers who love older SD games it will probably fail in todays MW2 market and with it SD could fail as a company…None of them want to work for free, they can’t. Not to mention the chance Bethesda is taking on the game after Wet and Rogue Warrior…

So instead they’re trying to cater to EVERYONE, which is a much larger task than just making a popular game so please show some respect and have some faith in the developers. They’ve most likely been doing it longer and know more about the current market trends and game development tricks than you (though, i could be wrong),

Also, let’s not forget that PC gaming has dropped off A LOT in the past few years. With the rise of Console gaming (taking up more than 75% of the market if you don’t count MMOs). We should be thankful that developers even make games for PC anymore. I mean no company can really survive of PC only games anymore except id, Blizzard, and Valve and even they have outsourced console ports in the past…(All three of them)…Well, and Sid Meier and even his games have seen consoles…

/End rant/ramble.
