A discussion on the state of the game, mainly balance
While im not entirely certain I agree with your CS:GO analogy (if CT loses in that game its because people got bored of camping, understandable but wrong of them) and I dont see how balance is any different in a f2p game I do see where you are comming from with less classes. Unfortunately they decided not to go the cosmetic customization route and hence have to have a number of classes to sell. This might well be what keeps this game from every being properly geared towards competitive play.
Also Im a bit shocked by you claiming Quake has no tactics. Im not sure you ever played it on a competitve level. The situational awareness of these guys is so intimmidating that I love to watch streams but flat out refuse to play myself.
thats true for 1on1 but other modes would be even more deathmatch-y then Dirty Bomb.

Just try a 5v5 pug one day, and see how much more tactical and less spammy it is. Thats where the game shines.

Well actually I meant less classes, but all of the options are available within a specific class. Like choosing an SMG over a Shotgun for dps vs burst damage, or choosing mines over a sentry, things like that. If all the Engineers were all just one class and you had to make real careful decisions about how you wanted to use Engineer, it’d probably be a lot more fun in that regard.

But to put it bluntly, I’m saying Dirty Bomb is heavily a team game as opposed to a DM one. To me, it sounds like you want the game focused on the gunplay, and the raw skill of the players, but that’s just not as fun to play since the obviously best players will stomp, the other won’t, and it’s over.

Things like Sentries, Mines, Revive, etc, it allows people to compensate their DM with knowledge of the game’s Meta, outwitting people through that as opposed to outmatching them in raw aim. That and you have to consider the game is free to play, so it’s got to be a little more casual so people will play it and keep putting money into it as well. I imagine that’s why Medic is so damn strong, and Engineers have such great area denial tools on top of being the best class to handle objectives. It lets people focus on other smaller tasks the contribute to the team, rather than just being the best damn gun s.o.b. on it.

And yea I guess I shouldn’t say Quake doesn’t have tactics, but it’s not the same, you can win Quake if you know spawns, locations, common routes, etc. But in a game like this you can’t win just on gunfights, you gotta work together with your team to get shit done, the team with the best strategy usually wins, even if their team doesn’t exactly get the most kills.

It’s hard to really put it in the right words since I am at work and multi tasking here, but to put it simply, it’s a matter of idealogy in game design.

If Splash wanted to make another Enemy Territory, they would have sold it for 20 bucks, not make it free to play. With this game, I think they wanted to offer as many options as possible to play with each class, but very tightly balance them to prevent certain loadouts being the best. Hence why there’s so many Mercs, where there could just be a few classes. But it’s also because I think they wanted to try something new, and not make the same game over and over.

Bungie did the same thing with Destiny, but Splash doesn’t have the same issue of a publisher conflicting with their ideas. At least I hope so, hopefully when the game is out of beta the game will get better. But I won’t know till I’ve seen everything it has to offer, haven’t even tried Competitive yet.
