A CMM review

CMM sucks.

When CMM was first released, I expected it to have a hidden MMR like in League of Legends unranked games.
In Dirty Bomb, I do not want to believe that CMM includes hidden MMR when even after about 100+ CMM games I still get players with less than 5hours on steam in my games.

This completely destroys the experience for everyone included. Inexperienced players get trashed and veterans are bored out of their mind. Now I can’t be bothered to play CMM more than 3 games max, till the experience just makes me quit the game for a couple of weeks or a month since I know there hasn’t been any improvement.

Yet still the only queue I play is CMM. I want it to work. If I quit CMM I’d also be a part of the problem. The people who are like: “I don’t wanna contribute to the CMM player pool, before SD fixes it cuz it’s shit”.
It’s rare for me to meet more than just 1 or 2 players with more than 300hours in my CMM games. And most of the people on my friends list also only play through the server browser, so it’s expected how the CMM matches me with whoever is available in the player pool.

The biggest problem why the CMM doesn’t work well is us, the community, because why bother waiting in CMM queue with shit balance when you can instantly play through server browser with shit balance. But even that doesn’t excuse the lack of improvement on SD side in my opinion.

To help CMM improve, the first thing that needs to get a serious look is the hidden MMR.
A player with less than 3 hours and a player with more than 500 hours should NEVER be in the same game.
Add a hidden tier list on top of the hidden MMR.
Tier 1 for levels 1-10 and Tier 2 for after level 10 to try to match players according to their MMR. (Ideally Tier 2 would be level 10-20 and Tier 3 would be level 20+, but I doubt CMM has the player pool for it.)
I think this could also drastically reduce queue times for Tier 1 at least if the system can ignore MMR and quickly just match the players within that level gap. I also believe that tier system alone would already provide more quality games than the current MMR matchmaking.
If this much was changed, I wouldn’t at least have to deal with medics or fire supports who don’t know how to use their abilities. At some point in CMM I’d like to have a game that feels like a minimum level 20 server.

The second thing that CMM needs is an improvement in player pool.
It shouldn’t really require for players to be motivated to choose a normal game queue that should be standard in the first place but the quality of games currently proves otherwise.
To make this happen, just give away more shit and at the very least the newer players should consider to pick it more over the server browser. Weapon crates or keys or the new cases after every 5 or 10 games or whatever really.

If CMM will be kept in it’s current state, I’d rather it just died off. A year of hard work by SD, but so far it feels like nothing but wasted effort.

Agree with you on most of the points. A side note though… CMM is a great idea to have in any game, but the core condition should be that its only implemented after the game’s population reaches certain volume.

Up until that point the game should just go with server browser. Especially in regions with utterly low population.

This only leads to toxicity and frustration…its like a magic circle of pain that never ends.

i believe SD should at least turn it off for the time being to lessen the workload and then re-apply it again when the population came back.

Need a solo que , sick of going up against teams of tryhards who should play ranked if they that serious , its casual by name , no need to pubstomp.

To be honest…the only reason I play CMM pretty much is to group with friends.

The real issue in my humble opinion is that CMM is just counteractive to the whole ideology of the game. For a game based on fast-paced, highly mobile, and team-based combat, CMM only helps fost one of those three items and when it does it only does it half-heartedly. The game is supposed to be fast, so why wait 2 minutes for a match when there are empty slots with your name on it in the server browser? For team based gameplay, it only helps pre-made teams to stomp. There is ABSOLUTELY no community building that can happen in CMM because as soon as the match is done you are spat out into the main menu. There is no chance to play again with those players without making the intentional decision to friend request them and invite to que for now 5 minutes together.

The server browser was fine. There was nothing so terrible about it that it needed to be messed up this badly.

CMM has a lot of problems, it’s not just the playerbase and low levels being mixed with high ones.

One of the main reasons I dislike CMM is because players aren’t kept together after a match. You can’t keep memeing with the same person, and as a result there’s less opportunity to build connections within the community, which is why I stuck around in the first place.

On top of that, SD’s decision to allow premade teams means that it’s easy to completely stomp out even a decent team. And from what I’ve seen, that’s what most CMM matches are, premade or no premade. Just a stomp in one direction or the other, with very few evenly balanced matches. Sure maybe overall you’ll end up with an equal ratio of wins to losses, but it’s not fun at all. If anything it actually feels even less balanced than the server browser to me.

The problem with that seems to be that CMM values grouping over actual experience. When we queued as a group of four we rarely got a match were the odds were even remotely even since at least one of us hardly had any hours into the game. Once our group became smaller matches got a lot more balanced even though we didn’t play like Gods all of a sudden.

It only seems to use last few games. If i play casual and stay dead last a few rounds i seem to get put in an eiser pool of players and thwn sudenly in a pool of hard players. Also i get alot of west coast servers im in the east coast . One match the other day 90% were 80 ping or higher. When im east coast im about 24 ping other wise im over 100

Add a Rematch option for them rare occasions it was a fair fight.

Well it was mostly just me and my friend…a few times we got a 3rd.

But yeah…it was often a stomp…either we kicked ass hard or we got a fail team.
