Greetings, I’m Abnix, lead admin for chigc.com’s et server.
I’ve been having difficulties of late with adding new maps to my campaign cycles. A long time ago I encountered the same problems and found a work around. Edit every single pk3 and pull out the .campaign files and then add the maps all together into one big pk3. The past couple of days, in the interest of not making my average 6000 players per week have to download a new chigcBIG*.pk3, I’ve been trying to do up some campaigns with the normal-unaltered pk3’s.
Well after two system punches and one dog kick, I’ve decided this is impossible. Every map loads at least three times and then the client always disconnects with “Server disconnected for unknown reason.” This is unacceptable for my server.
I’m calling for all admins to stop running maps with the map creator’s .campaign files and for map makers to stop making pk3’s with the .campaign files in there.
Sure, doing things my way means that everyone out there that plays on my server must download huge files. Ya know what? As long as it’s reasonable, my players don’t care. Hell, last week I served out 1.8 TB in map files, and not one complaint about any of it. So I’m going back to doing it that way.
Map makers: If any of you have a problem with me editing your pk3 and fixing it so it’ll run acceptably on my server, please connect to chigc.com in et to get my email address, any of my admins will be able to tell you what it is, and my admins are easily spotted because of their [Admin] tags. Upon reciept of your plaintive email I will gladly take your map out of the rotation and forever forego running any of your maps.
Why I think I can say all this: I run the et server at chigc.com. It is a 64 player server with exp persistance and lots of other goodies enabled. Obviously running the shrubmod. Infact, a little over a week ago Shrub himself approached me to test run the new beta version of his mod and a beta stats engine. Last time I checked AllSeeingEye, my server was the only one listed that could handle 64 players, and following the etstats site, on Thanks Giving day we passed the other most popular server on the list. Using that progression of facts, being the operator of the most visited et server in the world, I think I have a little weight to throw around.
