8 vs 8 mp over p2p on console. (will it lag?)

(Shotgun Surgeon) #21

Then we have Crysis 2… 50% of the time you can get into games instantaneously, other times you wait for quite some time to get even a 3v3 going. And a good 75% of the time when you actually do get in a game, the host is from either Japan or Mexico, obviously pretty far away from everyone else because everyone else has 1 red bar.

It’s not just the fact that it’s P2P. Netcoding DOES help. Obviously, the netcoding for Crysis 2 is pure crap. So P2P or not, let’s just hope Brink has some pretty good netcoding.

(RadBrad31) #22

I will be honest and say I know the difference between P2P and Dedicated and that’s pretty much where my knowledge ends. I guess netcoding is the algorithms they use to decide hosts and what players go to what games? That would be ultimately important I suppose. And that would explain why some games P2P plays so smoothly, while others not so much.

I guess AC:Brotherhood is P2P and doesn’t always work the best. It can take 4-5 minutes to find enough people for a game, sometimes it gets hung up trying to find a final player and you have to leave. That’s the only game that comes to recent memory I’ve had any issues with online multiplayer though, and lots of people have complained about it. ****ty netcoding?

(SladeNoctis) #23

@Nail Yea i know, i guess im too spoiled with dedicated servers on most of the games i play i was a bit worried about this game.

@RadBrad31 Yup hopefully Sony ups there game in every aspect of security. One good thing about Brink is that playing single player will have a feel of multiplayer so its ok if PSN. I would rather have Sony take there time and enhance the protection on PSN. I’ll add you when it comes back on.

(TiN TiN) #24

We’ll just have to wait and see. It’s all about the net coding and host. I’m sure we’ll have the majority of games just fine but we’ll get the occasional bad host or laggy game. I haven’t heard word on host migration but I’m sure it has it. And player with best DL & UL gets host. Which pretty much gets rid of my hopes of ever pulling host lol.

Also Xbox has a day one patch fixing some matchmaking issues, so if xbox needed patching I’m sure everything else in the coding is up to their expectations.

(DouglasDanger) #25

I hope Brink has a more stable network connection whatever than Black Ops!

(Herandar) #26

How much revenue were they generating from 79 million free accounts? (I kid, I know that their main sonyonline website has also been down and they have PS+, but it isn’t like they are going to be losing PS+ accounts.)

(RadBrad31) #27

Haha, supposedly they made 500 million last year from PSN sales. Which with the economy getting better, and all these amazing exclusives coming out this year, you have to imagine that number would be greatly increased from last years numbers. But then when you add in developers shaky faith on them, and customers jumping ship, it adds up quickly for a big company like Sony.

I see what you did thar though!

(DazTroyer) #28

Crysis 2 was shocking online, most if not all of that is due to poor net code as other games aren’t as bad. As for the likes of MW or Black Ops, they have 50% less players.

I’m hoping my mates 4.5 meg upload will give us a stable game. Soon find out I guess.

(iezza) #29

Ive actually got a good connection, with crysis 9 times out of 10 im in a 3 bar+ game. and 5 times out of 10 in homefront its the same.

4.5 up? That’s crazy. Who needs that much up!? I have 20 down and 2 up and I never have issues with lag.

4.5 is craaazy.

(iezza) #31

i have 4 down and something like 1 up and thats plenty. considering NO ONE uses internet but me so its all mine

(indirect) #32
the chances are that lag will occur in some games as the amount of lag depends on the dl and ul speed of the host.
most peoples net should cope but you will get lag in some games.
most games company’s put in some kind of bandwidth detection and host the game with the player on the highest band width.

all in all i wouldn’t worry about it im sure the have optimized the crap out of the networking since the whole big idea is merging online play.
It actually has 0%, that’s right a complete 0%, reliability on the DL speed of the host. Only the UL speed.

Wait are you really saying MW2 and BO have 50% less players than Crysis 2? LMFAOOAMFAUI(FHASUIDFHGJDGHFUIASBHFUILAHSDBF

(Shotgun Surgeon) #34

I’ve got a good connection too. And I definitely know for sure that it’s not user network problems because most people go through this. If 9 times out of 10 you’re in a game where everyone has good connection to the host, then you’re pretty damn lucky. But for the average Crysis 2 console player, they wind up in a game with the host being from some distant country and everyone else in that game has 1 bar and complaining about it.

Hopefully Brink won’t be the same. As fun as Crysis 2 was, the lag was too much of a frustration to handle.

(DazTroyer) #35

That’s so true of Crysis, shame to as I really rather liked it online.

My mate has 100 meg cable, so 4.5 up is low if you ask me lol. I’ve the same, 20 dl 2 ul on BE.

@indirect. Think about it fella, 50% less player than er… Brink. So that’s less strain on connection and maybe more lag in Brink. That is what we are actually talking about.

(Wepohn) #36

Never played a game on a console that hasn’t lagged with so many players in the one game.

(indirect) #37

I played Ground War exclusively on W@W (which was well known to have the worst net code of any cod game to date) and never lagged once.

(DazTroyer) #38

Ground War never lagged once wtf. ALL game modes in any game with over 12 players has some lag, ever since Halo 2’s “big team lag” Christ, even Battlefield bad company 2 has some lag at times and that runs on servers.

(indirect) #39

Or you just have a bad connection…

YOUR EXPERIENCE != EVERYONE ELSE’S EXPERIENCES DERP

(RadBrad31) #40

100 mb cable? We offer that, but it’s 100 bucks a month. Crazy.

And, I never have lag problems. Whether it’s AC:B, COD, Resistance 2, take your pick. I don’t understand all these people with P2P problems… I’m starting to think it’s the individual’s connection more than the actual service.
