64 player dedicated server -> ERROR: Hunk_Alloc failed on 1737792

(pazur) #1

I’m testing Adlerhorst TE and I got this error when starting a 64 player dedicated Internet host:

ERROR: Hunk_Alloc failed on 1737792

… is my pk3 too large? Like too many textures etc.? I know this from running a map and there /set com_hunkmegs 128 helps of course, but I have the feeling that this server error message is something else. I even went up with my gridsize and lowered visdatasize in the map - that didn’t help.

I also noticed that many custom map servers out there have 48-56 players, not 64. Is this maybe the reason? What do you guys think?

each slot usually cost money, each used slot is causing additional traffic, additional traffic costs. that’s why there aren’t many 64 players servers… most maps aren’t designed to handle that many players anyway.

The engine is made for a maximum of 32 players.
All above can end up in different errors.

Hmm… I always thought RTCW MP and ET can run 64 players. I think there is even a hack to have about 100 players. I wonder what the reason for this is… Adlerhorst 1.0 ran fine with 64 players. I added one more tga to the pk3. The bsp size even got smaller as I optimized the visdatasize.

Just found this regarding the server side problem with Hunk_Alloc:

had a problem on my mod when i tried to change the axis_wins.wav…had to set the com_hunkmegs to 250 to make it work…removed the song and it works again

Sounds seem to eat really a lot of memory. Just kicked some target_speakers.

(IndyJones) #7

italyfp2 has 228 target_speakers… i think that’s a lot :stuck_out_tongue:

(pazur) #8

Yea… didn’t count mine yet  but I guess I have nearly the same amount. I hate this legacy limit stuff or is anybody running W:ET on a Pentium 3 500Mhz with total 128MB of RAM & a Riva TNT (that was my Quake III Arena gaming rack more or less)?

ERROR: Hunk_Alloc failed on 1737792

As far as i know, its for memory, did you try 'n put your /hunk_megs to more?

(IndyJones) #10

i bet he does, but he is trying to make his map working on default settings… wich i think is completly not worth. it’s 2008, not 2003.

(pazur) #11

Yea, I think I give it up on that error message and just add a line about it in the readme.txt

i’m late responding, but I would suggest to give a try with jaymod, it has a nice feature to analyse, maybe that gives a hint…
