Why is my fps capped at 30 while outside using vsync? 30 is not even playable while 60 is, so I can play smooth only inside? My PC can handle over 30 fps outside as I have tried without vsync but it stays at 30 no more or less with vsync when outside. This is the weirdest system I have ever seen, fps jumps are nothing but bad.
its a technical issue with the idtech4 engine. offline the game runs in listen mode. not sure what this means exactly, but thats the reason why its capped at 30fps.
the sense behind it is probably that a constant 30 fps look more smooth than non constant framerates between 30-120 for instance.
The reason for the drop to 30 FPS with V-Sync on is due to the fact that when indoors your PC is able to keep up a constant 60 FPS or higher. When you move outdoors with v-sync on, if your FPS would drop below 60 FPS
then the constraints of v-sync cause you to drop FPS to the next stable refresh rate which is 30 FPS on a 60 Hz monitor. I wish I knew the math better as to why.
You can try turning on Triple Buffering to see if it helps alleviate the drop to 30 FPS, but I want to say it has been recommended to turn Triple Buffering off for Brink.
For a more detailed explanation you can check out these 2 web pages below.
So if enabling Triple Buffering hinders your performance or dosn’t help with the 30 FPS, you may be better off turning v-sync off and deal with tearing if you have any.
