3rd person

(Icemonkeyjr) #1

Let me start by saying im not one of those brink haters saying customisation is piontless if the games not in third person, because that’s stupid other people see you.

Anyway, i read somewhere that it was thought that there’s a perk in brink which lets you play in third person, i think the person who wrote this was confused with the situational awareness hacker perk, but i would like to know if anyone can confirm a third person perk or mode?

I only recall a perk being detailed that would pull out the camera during a hack/plant to give you a wider view of the area. It at least means a 3rd person mode seems possible within the engine.

(tokamak) #3

Well it always was considering ETQW had 3rd person as well.

I think (hope) the perk is the only way to get a third person action.

(LyndonL) #4

Why hope? If you don’t like it, don’t use it. If it’s an option via cvars or whatever they’re called in the id engine, why deny it to other people?

(I don’t like 3rd person either though)

It’s not so much a matter of what you like it’s whether the perk is going to imbalance everything else in the game. Considering the issues with maps, weapons, classes, health, load-outs etc we’re now looking at 10’s/ 100’s of perks. It’s hardly optional if one perk give a general advantage over many others, it then becomes necessary to use that perk yourself or pick one to counter it. No longer are you catering to your play style with perks but to the successfulness of SD in balancing the perks in the first place.

(LyndonL) #6

No… He was saying he doesn’t want 3rd person to be in the game beyond the perk, and I was suggesting that it makes little difference.

And I hardly see how having that perk will unbalance the game. Using that perk which is only useful for a small percentage of the total gameplay stops you from using other perks (due to using a perk slot) which could potentially be useful for a far larger percent of the gameplay.

(potkettleblack) #7

And in organised scrims where comms are used and pub rushing tends to fail as a valid tactic, it might be more beneficial to have something else. I dont object to players wanting to use it, particularly the way it was shown in the last E3 video. ie no 360 view

(murka) #8

3rd person view lets you see behind walls. This as a perk? Why not add auto-aim as a perk too? They did say that no perk should ever make a huge difference, only focus weapons on a specific gamestyle one might be good in etc.

If I am not able to draw a line of sight to my opponent then so shouldn’t he be able to.

I’ts a really restricted perk, it only activates while you’re doing an objective. It’s not going to make much of a difference and I don’t think skilled players are going to waste a slot on it anyway.

(Icemonkeyjr) #10

I really hate to make the comparison but i think a separate game type like in modern warfare would fit well into brink with third person

(murka) #11

They were talking about allowing full 3rd person as a perk.

(tokamak) #12

Right, then I think 3rd person would be too powerful as a perk.

(jRAD) #13

Do you have a source for that?

(tokamak) #14

I think he means within this thread.

(murka) #15

They as in some posters in this thread i replied to were talking about a perk that allowed full 3rd person.

(tsnyder700) #16

3rd person mode would be cool, but I wouldn’t play it.

(Szakalot) #17

full on 3rd person is definitely overkill. Restricted 3rd person wont make a diff in a fast game like this (have you ever used 3rd person deploy tool in QW? The game is too fast to risk not having your weapon drawn out at all times).

(INF3RN0) #18

I can only see 3rd person being useful while on a hack objective. Its use for that is quite obvious, but seeing as most maps aren’t exactly big open fields and its 8v8, I doubt I would ever prioritize it when picking perks.

(Joshua Morrison) #19

It would be a terrible perk, and would ruin the perk system. Like someone else said the ability to see around corners without exposing one’s self is to valuable and would make it stupid/pointless to pick other perks without this ability.

A game mode well thats different, a perk (that promotes camping) thats just straight up stupid. When one perk makes you 5% faster, another gives you 5% more ammo, and one gives you 50% more health then weather or not you like having more health you have little choice in the whole scheme of things.
