3D Studio Max (VIZ)

This is probably not the right place to post this as it is not realy anything to do with modelling or modding RTCW or ET but I will give this a shot.

I have a friend who when at university used something called 3d Studio VIZ so she says. But can someone tell me what the difference between 3D studio and 3D Studio viz? From my vast knowledge of 3D Studio max which is about 30 seconds of looking at a book it appears VIS is just a rendering option within the program?

Viz and max are not that differend, I believe viz is an older version of max.
I have worked with both and they both have about the same features.
What the difference is exact iā€™m not sure.
