3 Water based Questions

(PharCough) #1

I have some issues with making/using water.

1: When i try and cut in the river bed underwater, i get very fragmnted brushes that leave vertical water surfaces showing when swimming under it.
I know its something i’m doing wrong cos i’ve seen it work in the tunnels that drain in the game, whats the best method for creating rivers/water ? And is there a tutorial for creating rising/falling water levels like the pumps/tunnels ?

2: Another is that when you make a simple pool of water and jump in, the player moves slowly in one direction. How can i turn this off ? I want it to behave like normal ground but movement speed to be reduced slightly.

3: Making a boat ‘float’. I haven’t tried this much yet because of the other 2 problems, but before i start maybe someone can help me out. I want to make a boat that behaves pretty much like the tank in goldrush, instead of the barb wire barriers i want to use ‘locks’ that take the boat up a hill. These would act more like the train barrier in railgun in holding up the boats progress. Is it easy to make the boat float on the water surface if the surface level changes or am i totally mad ?
Also, is the barrier in railgun considered as one of the 3 stages, would there be a limit on how many locks i can have. Would i have to be sneaky like goldrush and have a boat going through 2 locks, then change to another boat and have 2 locks for that etc (like tank/truck trick) ?

  1. you can prevent the vertical surfaces by the use of nodraw water on all sides of the brush except the upper one
for creating a river just make a long water brush, it can overlap other brushwork, it’s no problem with water, for a rising/falling water effect you would need to experiment with sprites or create a good water shader

  2. don’t know if you can turn that off, guess no

  3. the movement of the boat is absolutely independent from the surface, it is moved by script movers or the way is predefined with splines, as for script movers there are tutorials at nib’s world, surface, tramdesign and many more pages would learn the basics first before you do such a complex movement

So the only way to add in a decent looking river is to make an extremely

large water brush? I have a large map with 2 rivers merging into 1.

I’ve created a separate brush for each river and noticed some ugly

clipping affects when I try to merge them. Am I going about this the

wrong way? Will a large water brush tax fps (even if the majority of it is

hidden underground)?

Thx!

Pharcough, that sounds like a really cool idea btw!

you can put several water brushes together but you have to use nodraw-water at their sides… in your case this would be the better solution

Thx, I’ll try that out!

My map is set in a snowy climate. Is it possible to make the water do damage to anyone who swims in it? Not instant death but slow damage like when people drown.

The water flows quickly so it does not freeze over and because of the cold would cause damage…that is my story and I am sticking to it

Just make a brush the same size as ur water brush and right click and then choose trigger hurt.

then key = dmg
value = 5

this means 5 health is taken from u every few seconds
