3 vs 3 OBJ games are not very fun, any suggestions to fix that?

(SinDonor) #1

When a server is full, this game is so much fun. I really enjoy playing the game when it’s 5v5 or 8v8 etc.

But, here in the USA after 9pm, the Alpha Test population is tiny. We’re lucky to get 6 people online. When we play these 3v3 OBJ games, many times the “fun” isn’t there. Especially for lower skilled guys like me who get killed way too much.

But perhaps there could be a way to fix that.

No, not bots (although that would be sweet!). But maybe kill the respawn timer when the server is at 6 players or less? Or perhaps have closer respawn areas when the server pop is below a certain threshold?

Any ideas?

The other point I’d like to make is that if you can make a 3v3 game fun, then once this game is live, people will jump into low pop servers and not just wait out of the game for a server to fill up.

Or, when some players leave, if the 3v3 game is fun, then the remaining players will stay around instead of all dropping out.

Message people on irc?

Doesn’t quite help the current testing situation here in the USA. After 6-7pm PST or 9-10pm EST, there aren’t many people on.

Also, once this game is live, making the game more fun for low-population servers will keep people in them instead of having a mass-exodus every time it drops to 7 or less players.

We are in an major Snow storm here in montreal Will have to shovel for few days after my work :frowning:

The game isn’t designed for low player count and shouldn’t be either, the sweet spot is 5v5/6v6 and should stay that way. My own personal opinion before this thread was created is that maps should be on the scale of Waterloo if they’re going for 5/6 players, but no they shouldn’t gear it towards 3v3… that will be overcome when more players are invited and nothing should be changed just because the alpha population isnt large yet.

Really don’t think the game is created for a 3v3 scenario, that’s really what the TDM servers are for? Does anyone agree? In reality in a 3v3 situation right now, I’m looking for things that aren’t right game wise; glitches, exploits, an other such things. Perhaps just learning the map better. I straight up just love playing period.

I don’t think this is what Sin is asking for. Fact is a 3v3 game is neither fun nor conducive to filling a server. If you’re lucky people will derp in warmup or play a crappy game until others join, however what is likely to happen is that people just leave the server. Building on that seeing a server with 5-6 people on it is going to passed over by people, why join something that’s likely to waste your time.

So yes, an active game with a large userbase will perhaps get over this by placing people via quickgame/matchmaking into such matches quickly. However if the userbase isn’t large enough you get a lot of atrophy as players find getting into a fun match more of a chore.

This brings us back to two things. One is having options to join a server in ways that ensure a minimum of people are up for playing, see my thread on that. The other is giving those people on a server something to do which is fun while you wait for it to fill. For that second part I could suggest warmup type games, deathmatch, catch the irradiated rabbit, gun game. Yet the problem there is people would be joining for objective and may have no interest in those sorts of distractions, back to square one.

So that leaves Sin’s suggestion, make a mini-objective type game that does work…

… I’ve said enough.

Thanks SockDog. Hit the nail on the head.

I know this game is meant for 5v5 or more, but unless there’s a solution to make 3v3 OBJ fun as well, people won’t join a low pop server nor will they hang around in a low pop server waiting for others to join.

My suggestion is to either move the spawn zones closer to each objective, reduce spawn time, or both (only when the pop hits a certain threshold). Once the minimum threshold is passed (when more people join), then the old spawn zones/timers kick back in.

Any have any other ideas?

hum? i dont see any real solution for low players count …its like in C&C renegade ,its have to have a minimun or its not fun …
Unless making a fun thing while waiting like shooting pigeons chalenge

Initially I read the OP and thought “this is a temporary problem, there is no point changing something that is caused by the game being in alpha, a state which it is only temporarily in”. And I stand by that, however it has broached across an interesting subject, how to build up a server. Or keep peoples attention while doing so.

It as a difficult thing, people hate waiting, an interesting mini game in warmup may be a good idea, I don’t know if this would be possible, but could there be some sort of large building/ room available only in warmup on each map? Could contain little training areas, like a shooting range, a movement assault course and some sort of fun mini game? I know it seems excessive, but people wouldn’t be afraid of joining low player servers to get them going, and people would be happy to start them on their own. The mini games may draw as much attention as the game itself, especially if you used a very good aim trainer.

Just an idea, is it feasible?

The multi-games in CS:S/GO immediately came to thought upon reading this. Something like that would be a nice thing to do whilst waiting but like you said “it seems excessive”. Also it wouldn’t really fit with the theme of the game itself.

Whatever keeps people interested in staying around in a server longer when the pop is low, I’m all for it.

For now, just playing the normal mode 3v3 is not fun for me and there’s only so much time I can take running around in the warm up mode finding map bugs before I wanna go play something else.

No problem.

3v3 is still not fun though. Last night I signed in from 6-9 pm and we had a max of 5 players show up. :frowning:

To put a different spin on the thread, I kind of like 3v3.
Not from a competitive standpoint, dont really care all that much about winning these matches.
I just think its interesting to see how the class dynamics change with small team sizes.
