3 suggestions for devs from an ET player

(premiumjones) #1

Haven’t posted here in a few years. I’m surprised my login still works.

I’m an old RtCW and ET player but I’ve been playing Brink for the past few days and I feel like it’s a pretty worthy successor to ET. However I have some suggestions.

  1. Smoke Grenades for Covert Ops - These were very important in ET to get through a heavily fortified corridor. With all the folks using secondary Sniper Rifles in Brink it seems that every mid-long range fight is dominated by Sniping. A great counter to that was the smoke grenade. Toss a canister and the snipers can’t see you. Then the team goes running through the smoke to close the gap on the enemy and push the front forward. This would also give the Ops another job to do when sticking with the team. And just for the record, I love sniping, I just think it needs another option to get around.

  2. Better Server Browser Filters - Specifically Friendly Fire on/off. I really don’t like playing on servers that have FF off. I know you can choose OldSkool and it’s on by default but then the dynamic timer is off as well.

  3. MAXLIVES/Limited Lives! - I know it’s a longshot but I’ve got to ask. To new fans who don’t know, Maxlives was a server option that allowed the admin to set a certain number of respawns for each player. So every player on the axis and allies had his own set of lives, once gone he no longer respawned until the next match. Typically the defending team got a few less lives than the attackers. This helped teamwork immensely because medics and revives were more important, as was gibbing. Whittling down the defense’s life count was another option to get past a tough chokepoint. Also it allowed new players who would usually run out of lives earlier to spectate others to learn how to play.

The maxlives servers in Wolf:ET were my reason for playing for so long. I can see why they were abandoned in ET:QW due to vehicles dominating infantry, but I feel like the option would work perfectly here since Brink is essentially ET with more customization and parkour.

Before any fans fly off the handle about how there shouldn’t be limited lives remember it would be an option, just like friendly fire and rank restrictions.

Thanks!

Nice 3 suggestions.

Supported!

,also a former ET player.

i support this thread. especially smoke grenades. in fact, please replace flash grenades with smoke grenades.

(Codine) #4

Vehicles didn’t dominate infantry in ET:QW at all. You usually got bombed to hell for stepping inside of one.

+1. The maxlives could be done per objective as well, that should make it a bit more interesting.

As for the serverbrowser, I think it’s rubbish compared to ETQW’s. It shows no serversettings like FF, and I can see only the first 7 or so characters of a servername which is hopeless imo. Servers are a main advertising point for clans, and you can’t even read their names at this point. I also couldn’t find a way to see what server you are on once ingame. Add to that the fact that you can’t see who’s on a server unless you use steam to join it. Somehow you managed to put a whole lot less information on a screen just as big as the ETQW serverbrowser.

Agreed, and for the server browser I’d add the option to wait in a queue for a server.

Remember the old one life to live servers for RtCW, while not my staple definitely fun every now and then for a change of pace, and have to admit the best teamwork I’ve ever experienced in pubs was on those servers.

Agree also on the smoke grenades, amazingly useful and underutilised for a long time in ET. I think SD replaced them with flashbangs to perform the same function to rush through heavily defended chokepoints, the problem being that the snipers are normally positioned so that to get a successful flashbang off you have to be way out of cover so get insta killed before you can throw it.

+2 maxlives.

Smoke for the covies would give them something else to do

(Om3ga) #9

Yea, better browser would be nice.

Nice ideas. Would love Smoke Grenades for CO.

absolutely SIGNED

Dont fix things that arent broken heh  (who might have said that for like one year mmmmm)

Apples for president!

(Om3ga) #12

well, W: Et had nice browser.

Nice call on the maxlives, but i agree with light_sh4v0r. Lives per objective would be the way to go seeing as how long you could be waiting to the end of the game!

+1 for smoke nades… long underused in ETQW, until people realized how powerful it is to hamper the enemy’s vision especially against sharp shooters…

Max lives ? yeah as an option I guess… I am a veteran of WolfET and ETQW but never really played with this setting, so I don’t know how it feels ingame.

(Sabayon) #15

Covert Ops having smoke is a very good idea… Better server filters should be available though I don’t really care as much about max lives. (How many servers in ET actually used that function?)

(obliviondoll) #16

Snipers are VERY situational in Brink, and the best moments to use them would be impossible to counter with smoke grenades.

The Soldier’s flashbang, on the other hand, gives you a solid counter to snipers - and they’re more reliable than Smoke would be; the vertical nature of the maps - particularly in the open area where snipers are most useful - makes a smokescreen a pretty limiting defensive option.

(TeoH) #17

Flashbang is surprisingly solid, tested range/mechanics on it a while back. The range is exceptional as long as people are looking at the gren, so you don’t necessarily have to be in LOS of the position that you’re trying to blind. Assuming a smoke gren would have to be thrown at the position that someone would be looking at in order to shoot you, then a flashbang can perform the same function, albeit for a short duration.

(tokamak) #18

I’d really wonder what the philosophy behind the decline in information distribution was.

(Beermachine) #19

True, but as people get better at the game more people will start to flick the mouse view quickly away and back again when they see a grenade being launched (especially one thrown into the open to maximise coverage), making flashbangs pretty ineffective against good players.

At least with smoke it will give the attacking team a chance on certain troublesome chokepoints to rush through to the nearest cover.

/agree @ all of your 3 points. Especially smoke nades would be great! Would love to see them. They would be very useful.
