3 questions about prefabs...

(iJake) #1

What are prefabs?
What do you do with them?
How do you add them to your map using GTKRadiant?

Cheers.

(xro) #2

prefab means prefabricated, most of the times its just brushwork (buildings, etc) wich you can place in your map.

To add them you open the file with radiant and then select all and copy to your map.

It’s basicly a part of a map, that you do in different map file than your “normal” map. Like buildings and all sort of stuff. Then you just copypaste these to your final map. The idea is that you are able to make it and test it easier, since you don’t need have long compile times, and try to make sense with the grid with full of lines.

Oh, cheers.

Two more questions,

Do prefab tanks have paths already?
and…
Are there such things as constructable prefabs?
(things allies/axis can construct).

(-SSF-Sage) #5

Prefabs can be anything. I’ve seen fully working tank prefabs (ripped from grush). Constructibles etc etc etc. The prefab has what the designer have put in it.

(Flippy) #6

Think of a prefab as a normal map file. It simply is a normal map file, with the same .map extension. It’s not a special file or anything, it’s just a name people gave to pre-fabricated examples.

You can import it directly into an existing map using “File - Import prefab”.
So anything that you can make in a map can also be part of a prefab.
Note that the prefab (the actual .map file) does not contain scripts or anything. However, if a script is required for the prefab to work it will usually be at the same place where you got the prefab from (the same zip file for example).

Last thing,

I think it’s always better to use “Import prefab” instead of copy/pasting. Especially maps with entities can get fucked up (and especially in 1.5) when using copy/paste. Afaik, Import Prefab does not have these problems. (Or am I wrong here?)

(-SSF-Sage) #7

Copypasting does add +1 (adding function) or something to your targetnames in 1.5.0. Then you just have to check everything has the right targetname.

If the targetname is “a”, copypaste it and it becomes “a1”, then another and it becomes “a2”. I’m talking about the new/pasted entity. Old remains untouched ofc.

Edit. target changes too. So if you don’t need scripting for the entity, you don’t need to even bother to check/change it!

Cheers ;D. gives 100£ each

A few more…
Where do I place the .script files?
Anyone know where good prefabs are?

(-SSF-Sage) #9

maps/mapname.script

just like bsp goes to

maps/mapname.bsp

etc.

Like here:

And tons can be found from the forums.

(iJake) #10

I searched the forums earlier - nothing.

Thanks for the links. Anymore?

(It’s bsp not bsb…)

(-SSF-Sage) #11

Upsss… Hehe again that typo-causing devil came to visit my keyboard. I’ve noticed that I almost all the time want to type it like “BSB” Thanks for sorting it out. ;=)

Edit. almost 400 post came up with the word prefab… hmm…

(iJake) #12

Lol x] Do you have msn? I need alot of help…

(Flippy) #13

Did you check the stickied topics at the top? Did you notice the “TUTORIAL AND ET MAPPING RESOURCES” post?

Look in there and read through it… you will find what you need

I believe there’s a topic about creating the pk3 file. In there should be a list with files and where to put them (eg, script file in maps, shader files in scripts, etc)

(iJake) #14

I’ve looked, still cant find any in that post.

(-SSF-Sage) #15

Where do you need a tutorial for making pk3? :stuck_out_tongue: Just google and dl pakscape and then you don’t have to worry about renaming and stuff anymore. And using it is as easy as it can be. Ok tutorial of WHAT should be in the pk3 could come in handy. Although most stuff I’ve learned is by searching, opening pk3s etc. Opening the files with notepad, if you can’t open it with it, try something else.

(iJake) #16

I don’t need a tutorial on making .pk3s lol. I just need pre-fabs and a tutorial on how to change the way you face when you spawn…

(-SSF-Sage) #17

For the team_ctf_(team)spawn:

Key: angle
value: 90 //90 degrees is just an example.

(iJake) #18

Cheers. (:

Got msn?

(Flippy) #19

Well you asked for where to put the script file so i suggested the stickies.

I do have MSN but don’t have alot of time since I just started going to university…
