2 SMART Systems?

(RAAAAAAAAAAGE) #1

Hey guys, I checked this forum for the answer to this question but to no avail.
I am loving the idea of the SMART system and i reckon 80% of the time i will be testing the limits of the freedom of movement to see all the awesome stuff you can pull off.

So i keep hearing that the SMART button doubles as your sprint button. (I play on PS3) So if the sprint button was the left analogue stick, i would click it once to sprint and i would have to hold it down to vault over stuff?

My main question is this though. I was looking at Brink interviews and such on youtube yesterday as usual. And i came across and old interview (2009 September i think) with Richard Ham. He said something along the lines of you will be able to hold down the smart button to do these acrobatic parkour things, but also said you can do them manually by pressing the jump button and crouch button at right times. he also said that by doing the moves manually you go over the rough terrain quicker and more smoothly than using the smart button. Since its an old interview is this still the case? Cause i like the idea of doing the SMART moves myself. And perhaps by using the manual method more advanced players will be able to get to locations people who just use the SMART button cannot?

Here is the interview Im talking about:

I think it is more likely that by default the SMART button will be mapped to L1 on a controller. You would just hold it and start sprinting, vaulting and sliding i would think.

I don’t think you will be able to reach places that SMART users cannot as this negates the purpose of a SMART system. Instead you will be more efficient and negotiate obstacles faster.

^ AFAIK

You’re correct. The system (SMART) is present at all times. Pressing the button simply initiates it so that it automatically works out whether you want to go under, over, or land smoothly based on where you’re looking.

If you sprint and press jump at a barrier at the right time you will launch over it.
Conversely if you just hold the button, you may run up to the wall, and have a slight pause prior to mantling it.

EDIT: “ninja’d”… I think that perhaps also you will be able to get to further places doing moves manually. I have heard rumours that if you do the moves manually (for example wall hoppings to a ledge and to another ledge) you will be able to do it whereas the SMART button might only take you half the distance.

Using the manual option will have its advantages.

There may be an area where you can vault over or slide under an obstacle, using the SMART button it may make the wrong desicion for you. Doing it manually will ensure you do what you want to do

Doing it manually will allow you to jump and slide while aiming where you want, where SMART requires you to look up or down for that kind of things. That’s an other good point for doing it yourself.

(Wraith) #6

Manual will also be faster than holding down the SMART button.

(JeP) #7

That’s why I said “an other good point”.

Smart will let you wallclimb, and run up a wall to mantle, but you’ll have to manually jump from there (wallhop - only available to Lights).

Also, there’s been mention in an article I read recently that the “manual actions are faster” thing is still in.

And on the BethSoft Brink forum, someone mentioned they experimented at PAX, and apparently pressing the button puts you into a sprint, and holding it activates SMART. When you run at a long, low obstacle (e.g small table) and time a jump right, you’ll do a speedvault over it. If you use SMART, you’ll slow down a little jumping onto it, then back down on the other side. That sort of thing - SMART is smooth and easier, but manual control is the TINY bit more fluid and responsive.

Yes, there is, this is the exact thread where this was explained…

Yeah there crounching and jumping. You can do all the SMART moves manually by pressing crouch and jump at the right time.

SMART button only works if you hold it down. So for example you tap L2/LT to sprint and hold it to parkour.

Around 3:20 they talk about smart

Thank u guys for the info. Sry i havent noticed the other topic.

see ya on the ark

Everyone in game will eventually learn to do all the SMART moves manually anyway. Like was said above, you will be able to line up shots and actually fire while manually SMART-ing. I believe it was also stated that manually inputting the actions has a quicker reaction time whereas the SMART system trying to figure out what you want is a fraction of a second slower. So it works out.

I’m sure the SMART button is just a stepping stone to get people acclimated to the system, but in the end I could see all players inputting manually

I don’t think you will be able to reach places that SMART users cannot as this negates the purpose of a SMART system. Instead you will be more efficient and negotiate obstacles faster.

If you are a Light character, and you are trying to climb a high wall, this must be done manually, so in this respect, doing things manually will get you places just using the button cannot.

Wall-hops also need to be performed manually.

This.

I’ve read this in a few interviews. SMART is easy, but manual control of the character is king, especially with light body types.

(BiigDaddyDellta) #17

I like that you can do this maually so I can map run to my joystick and not have to worry about holding it down to climb and slide. I’m glad this post is here because I have been trying to figure out how iI was going to deal with holding the bumper all the damn time

(RAAAAAAAAAAGE) #18

You wouldn’t have to hold the bumper all the time mate. You would just press it once and let go, then you will be sprinting only.

(BiigDaddyDellta) #19

I know I meant for manteliing and such, I wasn’t positive about the mechanic really I knew it would be fun but the fact that it’s tap to sprint and manual from there is even more appealing than regular SMART  I’m a guy who needs to button press lol.

(Kendle) #20

Am I the only one who doesn’t intend to ever use the SMART button ? I can run / jump / wall-jump / climb / power-slide in UrT (Urban Terror) without a button to do it for me, so I expect I’ll ge the hang of it in Brink.
