2 questions: day/night and fog

(cicero) #1

Hello!

I’ve seen some really nice screenshots here on this forum and of course I want my map to look just as good…(even though I’m a first time mapper…)

How do I change the brightness in the map? It looks like it’s a perfect sunny day and I would like it to be much darker but not total night. More like on a cloudy autum evening… How do I accive this?

If I would like my map to take place in a foggy place as well then I can of course place a huge fox brush all over my map but I have 14 houses that all are accessible… If so, how do I then prevent the fog to be inside my houses? Do I need to put hundreds of small fog brushes everywhere to get around this?

THX!

Happen to strubble on a 3:rd question… If I would like to have shadows on the ground from my houses, or trees or what ever… how do I make them? Do I place a HUGE light in the sky or do I need to place a small light everywhere? Have compiled my map with " -meta -vis -light -fast -filter".

THX AGAIN!

fog is always a shader file, shader files are files that tell textures how to act when light hits them. fog shaders can be used as global fog or as water light fog that pools in low areas, kinda cool hun? well let me tell you fog is cool. to add a good global fog you gotta learn a bit about how to use a worldspawn (“everymap should have at least one”) make a block and trun it into a world spawn by selectin it and right clicking it and choosing worldspawn. now press (n) key to bring up this entity’s values.
(you know your world spawn should cover the area of your map that is playable, no less and also have the max, & min key settings right?)

anyway add all theas keys then mess around with them

Thanks! But if I do as you say, won’t there also be fog inside my houses?
If I go for fog, I only want it on the outside, not inside the houses…

Yes you will get fog inside of buildings, but if you make it thick at a great distance then it will not show in small buildings. Battery is a good example of this. Global fog is your answer just tweak it for your map.

well…okej…thx! So the only way then, if I’d like to have thick fog around and between my houses would be to make a lot of small brushes?

Also, if I’d like to change the brightnes instead of placeing fog, how do I do this? To change the brightness in the level from the default settings (what ever they are) to more of a dark cloudy autum evening…
