The game classifies them as First and Second Edition, but Pokemon, so most people use Gen or Generation.

First Edition/Generation were the first set of 9 cards released for each merc, with major inconsistencies. Some mercs had more loadouts with certain secondaries and melees. (Fletcher had 4 cards with the Empire-9 and 2 with the Tolen; Sparks had 5 cards with the bat.) There were also major problems in balancing, because a lot of cards had perksets (technically called augments, but perkset is a lovely word) that were God Tier or Current-Phantom Tier (absolute trash).
Sparks 383 is probably the worst offender in the God Tier category, that card had no competition.
Proxy KE12 takes the Gen 1 prize for trash-tier augments with Try Hard, Pineapple Juggler and Double Time.

Second Edition/Generation set out to fix those issues and make every card be viable. For the most part, I think they succeeded. Notable failures include Rhino, Fletcher and Bushwhacker because of dependence on Nitros, Quick Draw/Lock On and Lock On, respectively.

Honestly the only problem with the 1st Edition KE12 was the Pineapple Juggler augment, since the loadout came with the Stilletto which made the augment totally useless. The loadout had Tryhard and Double Time which were pretty good with Proxy, the only real alternative I see being Guardian Angel or Drilled in place of Tryhard but even then the 120 health on a death streak gave such an advantage against medium or high health mercs like Fragger or Skyhammer because it didn’t reduce your movement speed when it increased your health.

I find Double Time to be one of the most useful augments and I often try to get it when I can for most mercs, but it never comes packaged with Drilled and in some cases that’s better to have.

Phantom has a loadout with drilled and double time
