14th September Dev Stream Round-Up

“Lots of people talking about Arty in the office at the moment.” – Possible hint towards further buffs? – “There have been lots of talks about giving his ability indoor viability.”

Incidentally it would be interesting if Kira’s laser designator fired a powerful, short duration, laser when marking an indoor target. But considering how powerful her laser actually is, doubtful we’d get that.

Oh, maybe give Arty a mini rocket launcher on his laser designator.

[] Shoe agreed the removal of Phantom’s shield, and making him less visible would be a “step in the right direction”. So, maybe. Maybe…

Hope that’s a joke. That would make him uncomfortable close to his last build in CBT (the one that had him removed because he was too weak).

[] Although, they play-tested Phantom today (at the time of writing) internally and the player doing so played him very well. So they said, chances are we won’t see any major changes any time soon.

What are the chances the player using him has a high level of skill using him? Did they use someone that doesn’t main Phantom at all? Or did they use someone that predominately uses Phantom?

What’s with that Turtle pun?

Are you trying to say something?

And I think that bit about Arty made my dreams come true.

(Yes) #23

Turtle has been teased to be the next merc for a long time.

That’s turtleribble. I’m totally not stoked for him.

(frolicsomeCrane) #25

That’s weird, my girlfriend told me she ships Fletcher with Fragger.

@Faraleth

But isn’t the whole point of Phantom - to be stealthy? All the shield does is encourages people to simply tank damage, charging at people head-on like Rambo, swinging their Katana… which obviously isn’t how he’s designed to be played.

He is supposed to be stealthy and a quick killer, thus removal of the shield (and making his cloak less visible, and the noise quieter) would give him more viability to be used in the way he is designed to be used - to sneak - not to charge towards people tanking damage. Just my opinion… :L

It could either be an amazing or a horrific change that will render him useless. It all depends on one factor. How much they decrease his visibility. They could decrease it by 1% and it’d be “less visible” technically. If they barely change it and remove the shield it would be a disaster. Essentially he cannot be a floating grey blob to any extent without a shield!

If they make him near invisible (practically completely invisible when still and less visible when crouching too) but removed his shield then it would be great. He would be squishy enough that if he fails to make use of the element of surprise he’d be easy to defeat.

@CCP115 You could be turtley right…

Oh yes, I completely agree. I like the idea of being completely invisible when standing still, it would allow for some awesome ambushes if played correctly (imaging people crying about this in pubs though - oh god, it will be hilarious) and his visiblitiy should be lowered quite a bit in order to compensate.

The main problem with Phantom is that he’s merely average at best in pubs right now, which I think is why Splash Damage don’t feel he needs changing - because there are still people who play him “well” in pubs. Making him too invisible would be a complete stomper for people who are uncoordinated, and they would begin with the whole “He’s so OP because I wasn’t paying attention” nonsense. :L

He’s terrible right now against skilled players with coordination, because he’s easily spotted and dealt with, making him useless for any level of comp. Honestly, I think they just need to completely rework him in order to actually make him useful to the game, because 9 time out of 10, he’s less useful than a Vassili… and that should really set off alarm bells.

FTFY

But srsly Stoker or riot.

(Jarppa) #36

I hope this “plan” also includes server binaries which we can install on our own servers, not just rented servers.

(Faraleth) #37

@Jarppa Definitely no plans for that, sorry!

A Phantom who is rushing in and killing people is way better than a Vassili sitting back and hiding. With only full invisibility while slow moving, that would make him one of the most boring mercs. He can already ambush people in corners, and in places people don’t look often. Get a high spot, or a corner, crouch and go invisible, same thing as you want. Like other recons, he takes skill to use properly. Any phantom who is using the shield to run in head first with katana is not playing phantom right.

(Jarppa) #39

Awww crap! How disappointing. But thanks for the info @Faraleth
Remember, as always, unless specifically stated as confirmed, please take everything with a grain of salt.

Possible changes/updates:

 • Grandeur SR should be getting some changes in the near future. No exact details on this though.
 • The invisible doors on Underground is a known issue since the last update. It is being looked into and should be fixed in an update soon.
 • Shoe agreed the removal of Phantom’s shield, and making him less visible would be a “step in the right direction”. So, maybe. Maybe…
 • Although, they play-tested Phantom today (at the time of writing) internally and the player doing so played him very well. So they said, chances are we won’t see any major changes any time soon.

Extra info:

 • Shoe would ship Vassili and Sparks (totally agree with this), and Masse would ship Fragger and Rhino.
This is what I look forward to the most. Changes for the Grandeur sounds amazing, aswell as not being mindfucked by the invisible doors.

'friend of mine plays Phantom and would really love these changes to him, seeing as he thinks Phantom should be all about Stealth.

Vas and Sparks, yes.
