100% gpu usage

hey, just a short reminder. i think i noticed this once in an unrelated topic but i think it may be important.

my gpu runs at 100% usage, framerate is more than enough most of the time. i use a gforce gtx 560ti on low settings.

this definetely is a problem if your card is not properly cooled. i use a thermalright shaman that keeps the temp at around 70°C. at 80°C the card will ultimately shut down.

i’m not the super tech guy but is it possible to hard limit the gpu usage? is it set this high on purpose for alpha testing?

thanks. i added the values to the bottom of the file and it didn’t work. going to take a more detailed look at it tomorrow.

what did help though was enabling vsync. caps the framerate to 60fps . gpu usage is around 60-80%, temp around 60°C.

You can’t just add them at the end of the file like in idTech, they have to also be in the correct sub-section (denoted by square brackets).

Easiest way is to search for the existing keys and change their values.

100% GPU load seems normal, as mine is also around 96%. Does your graphics card really shut down at 80°C? This GPU usually takes more °C to stop working properly.

Graphic cards can take temperatures up to 100°, most graphic cards will throtle when they reach a to high temperature. Anyway 100% load seems good to me.

Getting devices to 100% seems preferable, means that the game is actually using what it’s thrown at. On empty/low player servers mine is around 95% but at 12 or more players, it sometimes drops to around 50%, also the fps in game can get as low as 70fps. Getting a decently cooled gpu is pretty much a must have, never buy those reference cards, it’s just not worth the few € saved. For example, mine peaks at 60C when running furmark.

well, i also want to have a silent pc. my gpu cooler only runs at around 500rpm. of course, i can crank it up more to reduce temp, but then i start to hear it. :slight_smile:

not sure about the 80°c but somewhere around there, the card will shut down.
