Word Of Warning: Avoid Matches With ▌▌▌Named Players

(Fuze) #21
Special characters show up in the lobby screen.

I have a ton of edgy friends who use special characters and it’s not like it’s uncommon. Not really a valid way of spotting hackers.
Well, there’s a difference between someone named ᵡXᵡᴹᴸᴳ-ᴾᴿᴼᵡXᵡ and simply ▌. Someone just using one or a few ▌is very suspicious, but now that we know Asian symbols as a whole aren’t supported in-game, I don’t find it as suspicious as I once did, even tho the majority of players using them have been hackers (again, from my experience). That is not to say these people are all Asian, because this is not the first game where hackers have hid their names with unicode blocks or hard to repeat characters like S҉̹C̼̭͕͚͎A̷̙͉͇̜͉͕ͅRY͘ to avoid being reported.

Another example of why using nothing but a name to report a person is useless for most things online, games or otherwise:

How shameful they don’t have a in game reporting system yet. I would be embarrassed to run a game so poorly.

Maybe the dev’s have never played PC games before? Maybe they’re completely clueless to the fact that every game ever has tons of PC hacks? Maybe this is their first rodeo.

If this isn’t “Tommies first game design” then it’s completely mind blowing they don’t have a reporting system.

Are the dev’s under the impression that this is 1998? Maybe they live in a weird alternate reality where hacking in pc games isn’t a problem? They should come join us in this reality.

Obvious is obvious.

(Ghosthree3) #23

Could I please see the game you run that doesn’t embarrass you?

(pepperyPalm) #24

First game of the night and It was a guy with those symbols. He was a hacker.

(giftedStatue) #25

I’ve seen guys with boxes in their name, and I’ve seen hackers, but I’ve never seen a guy with boxes for their name hacking. Weird, huh?

(Fuze) #26

Well, now that we know the game doesn’t support Asian symbols in the actual match, it isn’t as weird as I once would have thought. Because now, we have hackers who purposely mess up their name with unsupported characters and any Asian player who doesn’t use the English alphabet. But then there are the hackers using names insanely common in Steam that are also impossible to properly track down. A good example of that would be this one hacker who kept playing Execution all day yesterday. Almost every match I joined that day, he was in it, aimbotting the crud out of everyone. Of course I reported him, but trying to track down his actual Steam page was a joke because there are 534,746 people on Steam that have his name or a name very similar to his.

(Old Man) #27

I don’t get it. Why doesn’t Valve restrict use of specific characters in Steam names?

(Ghosthree3) #28

Because people should be allowed to name themselves whatever they want.

It’s the games fault for not displaying those characters in-game, but there is probably a good reason and it’s not resource related because they’ll show in the lobby even after you’ve loaded in.

(twidi) #29

Yeah like mentioned, you can see the names in lobby. Here is one cheater (spinbot) that has been ruining MM games for a while now seeing that he has managed to reach lvl 27 already… DELETED

Just reported him, hopefully he is finally getting banned.

(Derpfestor) #30

DB doesn’t use VAC unfortunately, which they should.

(Ghosthree3) #31

Cos VAC works great!

(Amerika) #32

Steam is unicode compliant and the names display properly within Steam and even within DB’s Lobby. It’s only the scoreboard that doesn’t display those names properly and it’s mostly because either that portion of the game is not fully unicode compliant or they are using a font that doesn’t work with certain characters.

Even if the characters were displayed properly you wouldn’t be able to type those same characters. Again, if somebody is cheating simply giving support enough information like when and where you were playing and your own steam name will allow them to easily track the person down.

This thread should be pinned.

(brawnyJester) #34

Why it’s actually false

(Ghosthree3) #35

This would essentially be blanket name and shaming.

(Fleshpound) #36

This would essentially be blanket name and shaming.
Or actual warning

(Amerika) #37

This would essentially be blanket name and shaming.
Or actual warning
I have ran into and reported seven cheaters in my time playing DB. None of them have had characters that could not be displayed in game. In that time I’ve played against hundreds who have names or parts of names that could not be displayed.

The only thing you gain is the comfort of false warnings that mean nothing and spreading false accusations. None of which actually help you or the game.

(raptHouse) #38

played 2 games tonight competitive, both had players who had names almost entirely made of those symbols, both hacked like ****

edit im talking about players using that block symbol almost exclusively, not people with “cool” symbol names , literally people called ▌▌1 or ▌▌ ▌▌ ▌▌x ▌▌▌▌▌▌. Im not saying anyone called ▌▌▌▌is cheating but from what íve seen this week using that kind of formatting is becoming a way to hide

(Derpfestor) #39

This would essentially be blanket name and shaming.
Nothing wrong in shaming cheaters in my opinion.

(Ghosthree3) #40

Except not all people with the symbols are cheaters.
