There should be a mild shock delivered to anyone who uses vsay twice within 4 seconds. Reminds me of TF2 when all you hear for the first 60 seconds of a match is 6 variations of the word “medic” being screamed over and over as everyone charges out of the spawn.

And if you actually are a medic: good luck trying to use that as help on deciding who to heal. 99% of the time the person calling for a medic is on full health and doesn’t need a medic escort.

I think overloading the keyboard / joypad to deliver an electric shock would minimize this problem (until someone figures out the hack of playing with washing up gloves on).
The reason everyone yells medic at the start of a match is so they can rocket or sticky jump to the front lines faster and they’ll have more health if you overheal them.

It isn’t like those vsays are even annoying; the only ones that are actually annoying are the ones that are extremely long and drawn out, and ET:QW didn’t have any like that. They weren’t something like “we need a dispenser in this general area buddy!” That’s when they start to annoy people, but all of ET:QW’s were just “medic!” or “ammo please!” which is perfectly acceptable and even if someone did spam them they weren’t annoying.

I found the VSay annoyance in ET:QW to be fairly low. Yes, people did sometimes spam them - but for me, they were certainly more useful than an annoyance. I used them often myself, mostly Yes and No, and also “attack that target” which was really useful for highlighting enemy vehicles/armour and providing missions for the rocket guys and allied vehicles/armour  Also I played medic mostly, so appreciated people using the stroyent cell request one  I definitely miss them.

Because this game was designed for consoles first. Also because vsays are “too hard” for the gamers SD was trying to get to follow Brink, who have of course returned to Call of Duty in droves.

They also put a marker on the character that used them so you could find them ez.

Yes. Scouts, pyros and snipers calling for medics so that they can rocket/sticky jump. That seems legit. Like I say: the real calls are often drowned out by the spam.

Although I will agree that ET:QW had far less spam and the vsays were generally used properly. I guess TF2 just attracts the kind of douche who like to play the scout and spam sometimes.

My guess is that vsay is missing from PC because they’re trying to keep the codebase across the platforms as similar as possible and it’s unlikely that vsay could be implemented well on a console, especially when console players seem far happier with chatting over their headsets.

vsays are what gave RTCW and the ET series personality.

The lack of vsays was the first thing wrong I noticed with Brink.

(tokamak) #27

To be fair, vsays would never have fitted on a gamepad…

(Stormchild) #28

Even with a radial menu ? Uses an extra button though.

Said this about a year ago

Unless the vsays are prompted via the player, my brain seems to ignores the messages.
I found this to be the case, when I recently re-installed ETQW to test out my new GFX card.
Some dude asked for stroyent and immediately I felt compelled to pack him up.
In Brink, you hear stuff and its like - who cares.

OK, so there is no “voice chat” for requesting things like medic, ammo. But I hear requests for ammo in-game. What’s triggering that? I assumed that your character automatically called out for ammo either when you reached a certain % or when you completely ran out. I’ve also heard calls for medic in-game.

So these voice options exist, it seems very odd that there is no menu to choose these options from.

Also, regarding VOIP: “O” is Public VOIP. “I” is Fireteam VOIP. Is there a key for just team VOIP?

EDIT: Testing out the above theory I ran around behind a soldier bot on my team constantly clicking the trigger on my empty gun and he wouldn’t refill my ammo so I don’t think that triggers the request. Or maybe the bot just didn’t like me.

public voip means team voip in this case.

The ammo threshold seems to be around 50% of the starting ammo amount. Then you hear your character or if you are a soldier others crying for ammo. Soldiers also see these shouters as Ammo symbol on their minimap.

These auto vsays are quite nicely implemented but as often with things: People want to do it at their own and not some automatic doing it for them. Also they get ignored more easily, because they are auto msgs.

The really annoying thing is that you cant know who asks for this because there “was no UI programmer left to do it”.
A better feedback for voip, chat and those auto vsay in the UI would really help

Oh ****! I’ve been saying “good game” in the public voip thinking the people on the other team could hear me. I wasn’t being rude anyone! Just didn’t know.

Yeah any sort of UI feedback would be good. Name of the player making the request. An icon over their heads. And I never minded people spamming requests in voice chat because in the heat of battle you often miss requests from your team and you have to wait for a breather before you can pay attention to that again.

It could work like BF:BC2… aim at the class whose assistance you need, tap Select.
