What is the idea behind allowing only 3 different classes In-Game?

(Volcano) #21

will they allow mirror picks though because you cant in dota, i think you can in LoL
team A picks sawbones team B picks sawbones

(ejr) #22

In team League I don’t think you can mirror pick. (I could be wrong I’m not that much of a league fan).

I like the idea of having 10 different mercs in each competitive game I think that would actually be pretty cool.

(Protekt1) #23

I think it is good with a limit. They aren’t limiting mirror choices, they would require like 30 mercs minimum for a 10 man server for that. Once you can see your team’s choices, via moba style, you’ll pick smarter. And it won’t limit choice cause you don’t actually need everyone playing as medic/lt.

(fubar) #24

No, that would ruin any chance this game ever had at becoming successful or even playable.

I do agree however, limiting a person’s choice to 3 classes on a per game basis, is… ridicolous to say the least, it’s already horrifying enough that you need to be dead in order to select a class for your next spawn. Not to mention the fact that everyone can do the objective. I like how the entirety of this game’s advertisement contradicts with the gameplay itself.

(ejr) #25

I don’t agree that it would make it unplayable but maybe it wouldn’t be successful. I still think its an interesting concept. Especially with the classless objective stuff we have going on now.

(Hundopercent) #26

It would be like buying rune pages in LoL. I wouldn’t call it an advantage vs more of a convenience.

(Hundopercent) #27

Yeah not sure on mirror picks. Sawbones is the best medic, none of the others are even close so whoever gets him has a major advantage. Snipers are interchangeable except the auto sniper. Engies are mostly interchangeable as well.

(JTheJackal) #28

I’m with ejr on this. Definitely an interesting idea but sounds like it needs refinement.

(INF3RN0) #29

5 for OBJ, 3 for SW maybe.

(BAMFana) #30

I assume the current 3 merc limitation is temporary, at least that’s the impression I got from the patch notes.

I will repeat what I’ve said before, though, that I think Dota 2 style drafting would be excellent for this game. Pubs could have allpick, comp play would have captain’s mode.

(dirtybomber) #31

there is no way there can be a draft because that would require say additional 15-20 absolutely unique mercs which is not happening anytime soon

(Hundopercent) #32

Plenty of time to get there. Just hitting CBT.

(Angrim) #33

With 15 poorly balanced characters. You need a pool of at least ~40 for drafting too make sense for two teams of five players.

(Hundopercent) #34

Depends on if you can mirror or not. If they have 25 - 30 with no bans it would work just fine. They would only need 20 if you could mirror pick. There is always a way to make it work. It doesn’t have to be exactly like a MOBA.

(BAMFana) #35

Agree that it doesn’t have to be identical to the already established drafting systems (Dota 2 and LoL), but I think allowing mirror picks would dilute the strategic aspect of it a bit much. If there’s only 20 mercs at release, I guess mirror pick drafting is better than no drafting at all.

I think some bans are necessary too, to ensure that teams have a way of locking down certain strats or mercs that are considered imba. It doesn’t have to be a full five bans for each team like Dota 2, though. Two bans for each team should be sufficient until the merc pool has increased significantly. If we assume 30 mercs at release, I don’t see any reason why that wouldn’t work, especially since more mercs will be added post-release.

(Bloodbite) #36

Mirror limitations wont work since mercs are purchasable. What happens when all the freebie mercs are chosen during those larger pub matches? It also destroys much of the appeal of buying new mercs if you still barely get the opportunity to be ‘allowed’ to use it.

And then… NOBODY wants this to become too MOBA in style as the precedent out there is MOBA-experience=community-of-****holes.

I agree that it needs to go back to 5. Not just for variety and satisfaction but also to encourage people to play more than just the staple classes from other FPSs.

The limitation of 3 also gave me this nasty knee jerk reaction of… not pay2win but pay2enjoy.
