This will be controversial.

ON K/D, if you want to see it you’ll probably be able to anyway, just not on the end screen. Humate mentioned Rystats, there will most likley be something like that (probably several options). BMXer mentioned in game over-lay which is probably based off of the same info. A SD dev said something like if you want to set up a server to see them you can (not sure what that means, and maybe I’m mis-rmembering the bit about the server). So your friends shouldn’t have any issues.

On the matchmaking, possibly this will mostly be a console thing. For the games you’re likley to play you’ll probably end up on a server just like you are used to from RTCW, picking it the same way. I suspect the majority of private serevrs will be running with matchmaking off due to the exact issues you point out. I’m sure there will be some “beginners park” type servers and so forth, and maybe even some “level 4 only”, but probably not many and I doubt much in between.

If Brink is anything like W:ET, k/d will be bad for the game. In a 60 minute match it’s not uncommon for the attackers to die 15 to 30 times, the CoD crowd will most likely have a seizure after seeing their k/d plummet like a whale in the sky.

(V1cK_dB) #23

This made me laugh a little. Some truth to it. I still don’t see the big issue with showing k/d at least in the summary screen. Like I said, I get it but it seems just a little extreme. Totally eliminating k/d from an FPS? Totally? Like…there isn’t even compromise like at least the summary screen but we get things like auras, iron sights auto aim, etc.

(Seyu) #24

You can view kills/deaths after a round.

(V1cK_dB) #25

Really? I thought the updated info was that you couldn’t. At least it’s something. I’m sure this game is still going to be awesome either way but it would be cool to at least see that after the round.

(SANDMAN DAN) #26

What the hell isn’t controversial in this world. Since the beginning of recorded man we have been killing each other over ideals. The internet is no different.

Just buy the game if it looks fun and enjoy it.

People are getting insane about entertainment. Be happy you live a life where you can enjoy videogames.

People are getting insane about forums too, as it seems

I agree with you…and I’d still like to see how I’m doing in the “killing” department. If I go 2-15 and get a little xp for handing out ammo or whatever how is that better teamwork than someone going 15-2 and doing the same minimal things that the other player did?

Or if someone goes 2-15 but got plenty of revives, health etc and got a good xp score how is that better than someone who goes 15-2 and still manages to do those things? Killing matters. I’d like to see how I’m doing at the very least on a game by game basis. I’m fine with no leaderboard. Hell…at least let me see for myself how I’m doing in that category.

(JeP) #29

They know that killing matters, you have to do some to protect you and your mates
to give them ammo and health and approch/protect objectives and gain tons of XP.
Killing is a big part of FPS, they don’t have to reward you more for doing it,
people usually love doing for free, so why would the give it too much regard ?

This is just not the game for that.

(Bridger) #30

I think it would be fine if it showed only your own K/D ratio. After all, you can keep track of that yourself easy. It probably only becomes an issue if you try to compare yourself to others.

You’re kind of missing the point…

The absence of K/D isn’t because killing isn’t important - it’s because players tend to obsess over it, or make a bigger deal out of than what it is when it is present. Having a K/D listing, especially a globally ranked one, would change the playstyle and behavior of many players in-game. They left it out to try and avoid this, and attempt to have players perform more team oriented behavior - awarding more xp for team actions just strengthens this.

Players always have a situation where they play a game and then after it is over, without even checking stats, say to themselves, “I did crappy that game.” Players do not need a K/D listing to justify or determine how well they did. Players know how well did regardless - they know if they contributed or not.

If you need numbers and charts to assess if you did well or not, then you have bigger problems.

Killing by itself really isn’t that important - it’s who you kill and when. You can have 50 kills and have them all be low value targets - players that if you hadn’t killed them, really wouldn’t have changed the outcome of the game anyway. Or you could kill them prematurely, alerting the enemy team - instead of setting up a situation where your team could have gotten 5 kills, instead they only get 1, and 4 of your teammates die.

(Herandar) #32

Sounds like most of my games.

(DouglasDanger) #33

Do you have a source for this? This seems contradictory to what the devs have been saying.

(Seyu) #34

Some of you might have caught it in some of the reviews from the latest round of shows, but the final scoreboard at the end of the match does list Kills and Deaths, but it is ranked by XP. In the build we had at the shows, Medics and Engineers were always the high scorers, and by no coincidence the most important to the teams in Container City. Further info on stats in general is one of the last things we’re holding back on releasing. -Exedore (from h0rse’s compendium on fragworld.org)

(DouglasDanger) #35

Ah, thank you.

(Exedore) #36

That was a show build, and doesn’t necessarily reflect the shipping game. Hopefully we can clear this all up completely in the near future.

(Seyu) #37

Thanks for clarifying that. Personally, I’d like to see a post-match scoreboard without kill/death but not too concerned about it.

(V1cK_dB) #38

Cool. Look forward to it. Thanks!

Idk dude, maybe you’ve never played games where you can teamshoot people, like Halo? Teamwork is most likely the biggest part in a game like that where it’s more than just point and click. I feel like Brink has more health than your usual shooter, so teamwork will play a HUGE deal. And your teammates following you won’t just refuse to shoot at anybody, if they’re following you, you’ll most likely kill people much more easily (even IF they’re only buffing you.) 2 v 1… the 2 will win.

As for the other things, I agree almost completely:

Elimination as well as other gametypes seem GREATTT and would boost the game a LOT. (I can already see this game getting low reviews in the criteria for variety, ‘game only supports 1 mode to play.’) That’s going to get old SOMETIMES, free for alls and eliminations would make this game AWESOME!
(honestly, I hope SD is reading this and updates this, this OP is right, this has NO drawbacks)

And I am UBER disappointed about no lobby system on console. This has become quite the norm for all shooters, why in the world are you taking it out? Even if you are trying to ‘encourage’ ppl to play online w/o playin against a group of a**holes, I believe this is the wrong way to do it.

Levels: there needs to be a VISIBLE rank as well as your level, I think. Like the OP says, this worked wonderously in Halo, you play people that are similar rank. And the reason I say there should be a visible one is: they took out the visible rank in Halo Reach and that was a HUGE buzzkill. It was great to level up and TRY to reach high levels, once they took that out, playing ranked matches wasn’t fun at all. This would be a very cool addiiton (update/patched on later, maybe?)

And yes: Lots of custom options in private matches make games much more fun and can increase their replayability tenfold.

I hope very much SD takes these things into account sooner or later. Listen to your fans (and no, I’m not JUST a hardcore fan or anything, these are additions nearly everyone would love and enjoy)

Also: K/D ratios suck. K/D SPREADS are not so bad. REALLY hate ratio’s though (only per game, not an entire career K/D spread)

Brink is not going to be about e-peens…its going to be about team-peens…just sayen
