Support vs Offensive Medic

(Proxy) #21
Coming from TF2 as comp scout I played proxy and aura a lot at the start. At some point I transitioned to their SMGs. The hochfir with 55 bullets allows for sick streaks even if you have to regen afterwards.

At first I perceived Sparks as ultra ranged and hated her for the weak medpacks. Her healing output is just bad and relying on failmates to do frontline work is not often enough working. So, I found myself putting the railgun signature feature to rest and went frontline rambo medic. ET style…

The empire9 only allows for one kill per clip usually, but holy shit, this girl packs a punch. Shes got almost no downtime with her selfheal and fast reload. Plus she brings enough ammo to fight the way to the next ammo cache.

Proxy on speed, with medpacks, and revive.

Heh, not to shabby. Though I’m getting Rhino next when i save up the last around 23k gold i think it is. As Heavy would be my main class in tf2. (Fairy Hoooovy)

It all depends on the player. She can be played offensive but as i see it was designed as a supportive medic. As she is a bit squishy and unlike Aura and Phoenix don’t got kit designed to be offensive. Aura got her shotgun and heal station while Phoenix got his revive and burst heal.
Yeah, and the reviver gun is a very precise sniper rifle if you ask me. Now if you’re a good vassili player, you can be a good sparks player, once you get the charge timing right. It’s just that Sparks has a higher skill level requirement.

In the end, if you play characters like Sparks, Vassili, Red-Eye or any other merc where you can easily under perform, just be prepared for criticism. It’s part of the game.
I’m very well aware of that, though this person didn’t exactly bring any, all he did was complain on my score/kda being low. Which i ignored as he didn’t exactly bring any suggestions to improve. Aswell this was on trainyard first point where there is little cover for the defending team.
Edit: I’m still improving on my Sparks anyway, as i don’t own neither Vas or Red Eye. But on maps like Chapel if my team is doing good i’m doing a little practice with the reviver from afar.

Rhino is only viable vs totally new players… Think twice before you grab him.

This is not true at all. Watch the most recent Dirty Bomb Nation tournament.

You actually have that twisted a bit, in competitive settings Sparks and Phoenix are more aggressive (sparks because of her insane revive gun damage and phoenix because of his decent health pool and no need to rely on aiming healthpacks+self revive.) Whereas Aura is completely defensive and utility (rarely played competitively.) Sawbonez doesn’t really fill a specific offensive or defensive role because he should always be with the Fragger and changing his play style depending on what the Fragger is doing. While the players you played with shouldn’t complain about having one medic (they should just play medic themselves) you should probably pick a medic with higher healing like sawbonez or phoenix if you’re playing solo medic.

With potent packs and aiming you can heal a fair chunk of health. With extra supplies you can also throw them out fast - it’s funny to watch idiots ignore them, even though they are now highlighted with a giant icon in the HUD.

If your team-mates are obsessed with K/D ratio they should be playing deathmatch. For example, Proxy sometimes has to suicide fix the EV leading to a lower K/D. Also where are those K/D tools when it comes to guarding a simple flank - leading to their healer being killed - leading to wipe, and then them complaining. The list goes on…where K/D is important is if you are playing a class like Fragger - who’s main job really is killing the enemy.

Ive seen sparks players finish top and having a decent amount of kills. It the hardest class to play effectively and the majority of people that use her are doing so to snipe with the rez gun. Phoenix and sawbonez are probably the best when it comes to being aggressive, with the bigger health pools and the better weapons I personally feel they fit the ‘battle medic’ tag perfectly. They are really good up close but can be just as effective supporting a fragger.

Most likely, it was based on as she can pack quite a punch if the user is good with shotgun aim. Which is kinda what i drawed the conclusion on

(Proxy) #27

Yeah, i’m still a mediocre Sparks as i have played barely a week of the game so i’m still learning, but KDA shouldn’t even matter aslong the medic is pulling there weight by healing and reviving team mates. Which kinda is there role when not being agressive.

(FireWorks) #28

@Tidal Rhino is picked in comp cause they are not allowed a second fragger. Aura and her station can often be seen on MG, 1st obj Terminal. Both are used and niche alike.

So this thread made me play her again… oh boy what a fail^^ Got used to phoenix health and gunplay in the last days… The bigger HP make a good difference and 80 really is not enough to outgun someone the way phoenix can. So back to flanking and hitandrun

Don’t forget a lot of teams used Rhino to destroy the secondary objectives on Underground first as offense. It was pretty entertaining

And what exactly do you think i’m doing? This was no excuse merely to say that all Sparks dosen’t go with a good KDA, i’m not exactly saying i’m a pro with Sparks, this was a post not for excuses but to enlighten people to not be asshats when they even got a medic that does there job with revive and heal your team.
I’ve topped the scoreboard many times with a negative KDR with Sparks. She’s incredibly useless when it comes to killing or defending yourself. The Empire-9 is alright, but a stiff wind is pretty much enough to kill her.

However, being able to revive people from afar can usually grab you a solid score, even if you go 1-20 on k/d. I’m sure some people go positive on their KDR with her, but I’m not one of them. I don’t hate myself enough to make my life that miserable. She’s definitely useless beyond revives compared to other medics. Kind of a shame, actually. I find it kinda dull to sit back in safety and wait for people to die, so I just prefer Phoenix at the moment.
She DEFINITELY is not useless in combat - at medium and long range she destroys everyone with her REVIVR and constant self-healing.

(gg2ez) #34

Why not both? If you can aim well and have good timing, Sparks can get kills AND support her teammates just as well.

(retief) #35

On one hand, bitching at a new player for supporting his team but not being a god with possibly the hardest merc in the game is really stupid. On the other hand, a good sparks can pack a solid offensive punch. Unfortunately, I’m not nearly at that level. I still enjoy her, though.

(neverplayseriou) #36

Plays game for about one week, goes comp, goes to forums to complain about players complaining about her/him…

Btw if you’re not playing in a premade people will suspect you to make kills, randoms won’t be able to push on a few revives.

@ProfPlump

Please do not necro old threads. @Faraleth Doesn’t this require closing?
