Spent an hour specing Phantoms for gunplay. Probably about 90% of gun battles lost without cloak

Is it possible the gun fights you were watching were phantoms in unfavorable positioning?

I’ve found gunfights to be pretty even, sometimes though I get mowed down pretty hard. But a lot of the times as a phantom, if you’re flanking a side objective guarded by the enemy team, meleeing someone and then switch to your fire arms to attack the remaining enemy team if the area is a difficult gunfight to win as you are essentially surrounded by them. Something to consider.

I’m not surprised at all. Several things to notice.
Phantom is a stealth based melee Merc first and foremost. When he is stealthed he isn’t expecting a gunfight and focused on closing the distance. However when he is spotted he is caught with his pants down. Utterly out of position, quite often in a 2/1 - 3/1 situation without any backup around and his katana still drawn.
In that situation not only are you still in the mindset of “stabby stab stab” but you still have to switch weapons, while you are allready under fire. So quite a few say fuck it and still try to close the distance and hope for a last suicidal kill. In contrast a Bushwhacker or similar merc will hardly be in that situation. Staying in the optimum range of their weapon, staying close to teammates (for supplies, medical attention and extra damage) and having their abilities assisting in the fight (turret, or healthpack for sawbonez).

Phantoms strength is his ability to get into a superior position and get a garanteed firststrike if he can’t secure that he is most of the time a ok merc (nothing special) in a bad position. On that note most of the time Phantoms win a firefight they initialize from stealth positions (no matter what SMG they are holding). But Then so does any other Merc he has it just easier to get into that position unnoticed.

Either way that is not an evidence that Phantom is a noob merc he is new and both sides still have to learn the ins and outs of him. I bet in a few weeks you will see smart phantom players, that do either better in gunfight situations or learned how to avoid them better.

Except the videos and numerous evidence of him kamikaze-ing a group and getting at least 2 kills…and sometimes 3 or 4.
And yet the majority of the time it’s because they don’t bother to turn around or communicate, at all.

You can’t call a class op if your team work sucks, any class could exploit that. Proxy for example, I could easily flank with the shotgun and set mines everywhere. And nobody would stop me.
And suddenly you have to coordinate your whole team not on how to complete the objective, but to keep track of one merc. That doesn’t scream broken to you?

“Vasilli down range, don’t peek him”

“Sparks Reviving down the street”

“Rhino in the room, don’t go in”

And I could go on

Guess what, coordinating with your team to deal with a good player with any merc is part of the game, they do that in comp on a constant basis. Ask people like ChickenNWaffles or any of the Fragger players how much they get focused on before the enemy team makes a push.

It’s damn near constantly, that’s what you have to do to win in that level of play.

And for casual gameplay where there is barely any effort to communicate? And please don’t answer “start doing it”, because in casual there is far more chance people get pissed and leave rather than a real communication other than “revive” and “ammo” (often even those get ignored…)

No, I am going to say that, because we aren’t going to nerf mercs because we lower the standards of what’s expected from players.

Like it says in the trailer, don’t be a dick.

(DMaster2) #27

We? Are you part of the dev team by any chance?
Beside i’m hardly a dick, i’m just stating the reality. When you join a non-competitive game that’s what you get.

No I’m not, but the devs shouldn’t cater to the non competitive players, because they aren’t playing the game at all like the devs want them to.

They want them to work together, they want them to do the objectives and not just focus on kills, they want them to use their mic. If they don’t do these things then it’s not the responsibility of the devs to nerf various things to help them out.

That is all a PLAYER side issue, not a DEV issue.

(ThatRandomGuy) #29

Do you know that YOU GET CRAP LOAD, YOU BIG PILE OF BADGE XP with phantom? On average i get more than 5000 BADGE XP with phantom, thats how i am on top of my team. Its not because i got a lot of kills (i do have good number of kills though)

(scrub_lord) #30

Nobody uses him to his full potential. Just a bunch of idiots running around with the Katana bumrushing other idiots. I just can’t take any of the complaints seriously, because I have yet to even witness a decent Phantom player. He shouldn’t even be losing gunfights, because he has a higher health pool than most Mercs and arguably one of the best guns in the game available to him.

(Jojack) #31

There aren’t a lot out there yet, but there are a few.

(LANshark) #32

The katana has longer range, tons of damage (trinity force, thanks Phreak), can pierce enemies and ITS A SWORD! what else do you want???

He’s just a guy who doesnt want his precious Phantom balanced.

Without the casuals, you will have no dirty bomb. FPS games succeed because of the tons of casual gamers who play them.

And its disingenuous to say its not a dev issue when he was removed prior to open beta because of being poorly balanced.

(Guilte) #35

I have yet to see a good player play phantom. That being said, every player in public seems to trade. He cloaks, gets one kill with his katana, and then dies.

Obviously the KEK-10 load out is the better load out and a good player is going to wreck face.

The invisibility isn’t the issue for me. What I personally have an issue with phantom is his shield. If you play to aggressively, you aren’t punished for it and can just cloak again and run away.

An easy fix for this to remove the increased HP, and to make it so that you can’t attack right away after uncloaking.

(GregHouseMD) #36

I’m half-tempted to pick up Phantom with the credits I plan on earning tonight, and getting myself a loadout without the katana. Just to be a rebel.

EDIT: OH. Yeah, to the guy who was saying they shouldn’t nerf Phantom due to pubs. Well, good luck with that. I wonder what this game would look like if SD had that attitude.

(redhotDetour) #37

He one shots aura. That is annoying. Drop his hp to 100 and it should be fine and cut his absorption of the shield in half or make it were he slows down while being shot. I play nothing but aura btw and for the most part i kill phantom. Ive come to find he is the only merc called out and when in a match i have to actively look for him and change my playing style 100%. I literally have to have a stand off on every corner. I have been getting a lot of kills recently up close with some spraying than one shot melee.

null
If you watch gst800 stream you will see how lame it can be. Some1 who can actually aim and hides to flank with the sword.
