The only main concern any of us should have is if we distribute something for a profit. If you were trying to sell this map for money, then you would need some permission. However since this is just a hobby, and most people do undertake this hobby, there’s is nothing wrong with using copyrighted material.
Strictly speaking there still is something wrong with using copyrighted material without the permission of the author but as you said, no one will try to sue you for it since it isn’t worth the hassle. It’s like driving 56 in 55 mile zone ;-).

I would go ahead and use it too. It’s not like your raping the artist ffs (I am sure his record company is doing a good enough job of that themselves). I mean it’s not like you’re going to make millions of $$$ from your map as a result of using the composer’s work. I am sure if he/she heard the argument here s/he would find it quite amuzing.

You probably want to put it in as a nice touch in your map, like an homage to the film or something. The guy is just trying to be creative, he had an idea to use some music from a film. What’s the harm in that? Has nobody here downloaded an mp3 ffs. Keep it in man, and drink to the bird :drink:

tnx people. With your help, i will release the map with little parts of the soundtrack. And Even in the two secret rooms, there will be bonus materials from the movie :smiley: But i will reference evrything. Of course i wont sell this map. First, mapping is my hobby. Second i dont need money, made in this way, and third, i dont want to be accused for selling someone’s stuff without getting the permission…

I never told Victo not to use it, just underlined the fact that it could lead to problems. There ARE some people/author/producers/etc that are very anal about those kind of things. Have one tiny person making a complaint and they’d probably ask him to remove it.

There’s one thing you could do Victo and it’s to email the author/producers or whatever and ask them. I don’t see why they would refuse if you ask… Since you’re a fan of the movie you probably have a link to the site and I’m sure there’s some email you could use to contact them. The drawback to that is if they answer no, they probably would try to put their hands on it once it’s released to make sure you didn’t put it in…

Anyway, what you will do is up to you.

That’s what I’ve done with the Helm’s Deep sound pack I’ve made…
distribute it as a seperate .pk3 with a script to support the extra sounds.

SiliconSlick (who didn’t have much choice since he isn’t the map author)
