Platform parity

Maybe I got all my woo yay out of my system when Doom did the chainsaw. I just don’t think a gimmick like that made up for the clunky movement and firehosing weapons.

(tokamak) #22

The clunky movement was a sacrifice to the heavy dependence on interaction with the terrain. Which on it’s turned ensured that shoot outs could last long and be tense at the same time simply because the high lethality of the weapons could end it at any moment. Plus you are constantly playing some chess-like game in trying to get the upper hand in positioning in the maps.

(SockDog) #23

I thought it just meant you was hopping, skidding and sticking all over the place as your sprayed wildly in the general direction of a moving piece of scenery with pretty blood splatter.

We’ll have to disagree but I found GoW utterly horrible to play and quite boring beyond the gimmicky effects. I can only hope Brink is nothing like that.

(Floris) #24

As a fan of fast games I don’t like the sound of having the default movement speeds being brought down. ET:QW already felt too slow for most hardcore W:ET player. I’m happy to hear about getting better feedback from hits though.

Btw, when will you guys get that E3 demo accidentally leaked to the internet, it’s no fun if you are talking about it and we haven’t seen any of it!

(Rahdo) #25

Hopefully you’ll like our ‘acrobatic’ body type then, which does get you around quicker than the default

(Shiv) #26

I am going to be acrobatic
Hopefully i can have clown shoes, a big red nose, an affro… then i could be the acrobatic clown of doom

(DarkangelUK) #27

I can pretty much guarantee that’s gonna be my 1st choice!

(Mustang) #28

This is SD we’re talking about
Brink will flipping ROCK!

I trust Senor Ham when he says accurate and precise hit detection is there
My hope is that the netcode will have come along in leaps and bounds

P.S. Can you give any more info on the hitboxes being employed

(Rahdo) #29

I hate to say it, but I’m a simple caveman. I’ll point Arnout at this thread and he can maybe weigh in. No promises though, it can be hard to pull him away from his debugger

I only read the first post…

I guess my take on this would be to simply trust Splash Damage. I have played both W:ET and ET:QW with over a combined 1000 hours… Both of these were very well done and were amazing competetive games. I think both games were balanced very well. (QW issues were not balance IMO)…

Anyways, they are a PC company first, so you know they will obviously know how to handle it. I was drawn in to these forums from watching the enthuastic interviews from Mr. Ed and Mr. Ham. You can tell they are not just selling this game, they really wanna see it do good things come, and set trends with some new groundbreaking ideas (Smart button and the whole multiplayer concept.)

To be honest, since consoles are new for them, I would be more worried about being an XBOX or PS3 guy and wondering about balance. But they have a handle on that too I am sure…

They also said that they are making both games together at the same time. So you have a group doing consoles and a group doing PC. So this is really not a port from one side to the other… Please correct me if I am wrong on that. But from what I understand, this in itself should anwser your quandry.

Only time will tell.

We’re sort of doing all 3 at once, and that’s mostly an issue on the code side… for far better info, you can read Arnout’s recent interview that was linked on this forum. Richard and myself have mostly developed for consoles, along with many of the other post-ET:QW Splashers, so there’s a very nice PC/console mix overall.

(deadlights) #32

Oh nice, so I was close

shoulda read the thread…

Dunno, Codemasters say that about all of the games they do and they all end up being exactly the same on each platform. Right down to those bad UI’s on GRID and Dirt that you can’t even use a mouse in.

(Shiv) #35

yes, thats codemasters, this is splashdamage… who have already proved themselves quite capable twice, with 2 of the best pc fps games ever…

(Free2game) #36

I don’t know, this year has been a big let down from a lot of PC FPS developers. Between IW dropping dedicated server support and neutering the MP for MW2, Wolfenstein from ID and Raven being such a bad console port with broken multiplayer, to FEAR 2, everything about it. Now even ID Software themselves say they’re using the Xbox as the lead platform and that the PC version wont have any extras.

(DarkangelUK) #37

To be perfectly honest, a lot of the PC gaming community on a whole are whiney bastards who are just never happy, they expect everything that they ask for and kick and scream when they don’t get it. At times i think it’s understandable that devs don’t want to cater for spoiled brats any more, and develop games for a crowd who will appreciate what they get.

(Floris) #38

But at the same time a crowd which does not really desire any innovation which could help a game developer stand out. It doesn’t matter if you make an innovative shooter or just bet on a winning horse, on a console you will sell copies as long as your game itself is decent and the marketing money is rolling.

(Shiv) #39

other companies…

i would also like to point out the massive and fantastic developer presense on these forums.
most of the questions we have asked that they are allowed to answer have been put to rest with a smile.

(SockDog) #40

True there seems to be some serious inbreeding of the PC gaming community, every game has it die hards who refuse to move on and vocally attempt to grab the attention of a developer to do the impossible.

Then again, I see the console gamers as being no different, they’re just a few more generations behind the curve. Lets not forget many of these gamers only came on board with the PS2/Xbox if not the 360/PS3.

They’re not exempt though. Try and bring up M+KB support and they’ll piss and whine as well as any PC gamer.

What disappoints me most is that games are being molded to fit the console platform. This isn’t a design choice to make the game play better its a means to make an inferior platform equal to a superior one. As a result there are simply less reasons to even play a game on the PC, why bother when the experience is designed for a console? When there is no advantage?

New old chestnut. But MW2 is a great example. Other than M+KB support it’s exactly the same as the console release, even by price. Why even bother buying it on PC?

So my not so secret hope for Brink. That it plays like the mutt’s on every platform but if I pick it up on the PC it’ll take advantage of the PC, the same way it takes advantage of the console’s strengths.

The PC is fast becoming a port only platform and I’m running out of developers to believe in to make me think otherwise.
