The differentiation is you can always have the drop on a shotgunner, they (unless you are Rhino) have very little HP.

I/you can lie in wait near spawns, tell your team where they are heading, and kill all the medics that IMO does supersede most ability’s.

I don’t have a issue with the cloak Karnataka or shield even as it is currently. Have a issue with his SMG being able to backrape with impunity, if you take a look at the obsidian card you will see no Karnataka. If you are really good you should never loose a firefight

yeah his smg’s are very strong compared to other mercs who need them more, fletcher and aura come to mind. if they swap his main smg to something weaker like the smg9 and bishlock and not the other 2

I swear I’m going to unlock Red Eye as soon as available, because his IR vision sounds like the only hard counter to Phantom.

Here’s another way to use the shield: wreck shotgunners.
Shotgunners thrive on hit&run attacks, on getting the initial damage in. If a Phantom knows there’s a shotgunner behind the corner, he just goes with shield activated. No downside. Open fire as soon as you have his head lined up.

  • if he doesn’t shoot, you start the fight with headshots on him
  • if he misses you, he’s exposed because of his ‘reload’ period
  • if he hit you, the shield absorbs ~70 damage and the shotgunner is stuck in ‘reload’

Either way, shotgunners don’t get the first shot on you.

I thought the amount of ‘excess’ HP directly related to the amount of shield power he had remaining? People saying he has 75hp extra don’t seem to take into account that for the most part, no he doesn’t.

I’d also like if a melee attack is done against a shielded Phantom, this causes his shield to short out and shock him a little causing slow down for a sec or 2.

I honestly am done playing publics until this phantom issue is fixed. It is hideous to play against and sucks all the fun out of the game for me. You can argue either for him or against him but I have to say this is the more game breaking for me than the awful cheater situation right now. :frowning:

If you use this ability as a counterspell, then yes a lot of the time he DOES. There are dangers you can see coming, and then you can activate the shield right before. These include:

  • proxy mines
  • sticky bombs on ground (if he even activates them)
  • fire support
  • less than perfectly cooked grenades and airstrike marker indoors
  • open areas
  • falling damage (why start the next duel with reduced HP?)
  • turrets (it’s even better than +75 HP, it doesn’t shoot at all)
  • stoker’s molotov once he’s back
  • more to come as new mercs are introduced

So once per 6 seconds, you can counter one of these.

I wonder if you can capture forward spawn on Terminal while cloaked ?

Today a phantom walked into the attacker’s spawn on Terminal. He then cloaked and stood there wacking people as soon as they moved after spawning. Is this the game you want?

Quite Correct again!

Not a lot of people play with Bushwacker, because he’s a hard class to master. Yes, ok, he has the turret, which is only usefull when you know where to place it. I like this as I am the only one on the server with a bushwacker, because I think he’s the best class to have… he’s fast, thew turret is basically an extra person(people aim for the turret rather than you) and hes an engi!!!

It’s quite annoying that sometimes in a 8v8 server I am the only engineer there though!

I just want to add that Phantom blows without the katana. 2 loadout card upgrades, both with knives instead of the katana… the reduced range kills the fun in my opinion and gives me zero motivation to keep any loadout I happen upon that is missing the katana.

With knives, he ceases to be the reliable Rhino-choke-point killer he can be.

I’m just going to point out (again) that if Fragger hadn’t been nerfed this would be a lot less of an issue. So let’s re-OP Fragger and watch the chaos unfold.
My point is that there is no post on this forum that I can’t work my fragger butthurt into somehow. :wink:
(obviously I’m not being totally serious here just in case anyone was wondering)

On a more serious note, I have had less issues killing Phantom than Rhino thus far, but I can see how he could become a real problem class without some tweaking. Perhaps, as has been mentioned, rather than nerfing phantom overtly some other classes could be given small perks to counter. For example, Stoker’s flames could expose a cloaked phantom if he was too close, etc. Stuff like that might be a better route than just taking away the reasons people enjoy playing phantom to begin with.

I don’t see why people are so upset with phantom. I think it is mainly baggage from other games with stealth mechanics? I think he adds a new dimension and will hopefully be accepted more as time goes on. I’m not saying he doesn’t need tweaks, I really don’t even know. It is too early to tell for me.

I think if he does need stuff, first mess with the cooldown. Something like:

  1. cooldown reaches max faster while cloak is up.
  2. cooldown is now 8s, up from 6s.

Some people are suggesting way overkill, like removing the armor aspect which frankly is one of the things that might actually make phantom worth playing and removing it just makes him a joke merc to play when you want to troll people.

I think the whole Phantom release was textbook advance marketing hype, just say “Katana” , make a couple vids of people on killing sprees, sell more mercs than any other so far, use money to buy cakes

to put it simple: a tf2(more power than tf2 spy) char doesn’t belong to a normal fps game.
to me it’s just an annoyance, but the majority of casual players hate it and uninstall the game

When people call out the “phantom noob” comment, the reply is usually - “just on here to troll the <10 servers”…

What I have noticed is;

Phantom gets soo much XP… it’s ridiculous!
Using phantom whilst attacking on Chapel is a strategy most useful! Apart from defending a planted bomb, I can’t see my use other than disabling the team with that ‘extra’ player which caused the ‘phantom’ player to become a rambo.

EDIT. Today I was against a team of 3 phantoms… one, I can handle, 3, stupid!

Joined another server and the best way to get rid of a phantom, is to make them prove themselves to you!
Tell them they can’t shoot, that’s why they use invisibility - then they’ll say they just used a gun or something, well, seen as you were invisible, they didn’t have a fair fight :stuck_out_tongue:

I think, after today’s game, phantom is a little too strong, each player using a phantom had 17k xp

Even though I was still able to maintain a 2+ K/D, the objective wasn’t getting done because my team didn’t know what to do!

As there are soo many new players to the game and usually it’s the more experienced players who play with phantom (level 10+), people have no way to counter it. When it’s like the aforementioned, it’ll end up making new comers uninstall and never re-install.
