I use Proxy offensively a lot too, but mines. What is the base use for mines? Laying traps. Now, are traps better if you’re trying to keep someone from going somewhere you are, or going to that place yourself? Her ability is better on defense if you use it like it was intended to be used. I can’t use the whole “throw a mine on the ground then shoot it” strategy effectively, and I imagine that most noobs like me can’t either.

It’s one of the things I found easiest to do as a noob and see a lot of noobs doing it. It’s not really that hard to pull off, unless you’re just blindly running towards people not doing your best to avoid damage first, but that isn’t anything to do with being new that just isn’t smart play. My friend is only level 11 and I am level 56 and he’s constantly stomping people with Proxy by playing her the same way I do - super aggressive and using her mines more for group take downs rather than setting up doorway traps. Granted he only has 30-35 odd hours with her so far he is consistently floating around the map with a 3.0 to 4.0 k/d and averaging 900 xp/min with her on both offense and defense.
It can be done, and honestly after enough hours I genuinely think all mercs can be played offense and defense well, it’s just a matter of learning to play them the right way. I don’t think any merc is more defense or offense friendly (except maybe Rhino). I think if anything certain mercs are just easier to use but at the end of the day most of them have a high skill ceiling. How easy or hard they are to use is never a good indicator of over all skill ceiling or whether they are defense or offense orientated.
Edit: I just realised you called yourself a noob - How new and how many hours do you have with each of the mercs you’re putting into offense/defense categories? I’m only wondering as certain mercs I was able to use straight away when I started out (Skyhammer, Proxy etc) and other mercs literally took me 15-20 hours at least to be even remotely as good with, but after that practice I find myself even better with them.
I know it can be done, but my Proxy playstyle, and the mindset I’m in when I play Proxy, really doesn’t include “Hey I’ll throw a mine on the ground and then try to hit it in the hope that I hit it before the dude I’m trying to kill with it kills me.” My accuracy is pretty crappy, especially under pressure, so trying to shoot a little round thing while being shot at isn’t easy for me. Plus, as I said, the mindset I’m in while playing Proxy doesn’t include that tactic, so if I ever try to use it, it will be because I thought about it before hand and I’m making myself do it, not a knee-jerk reaction like just shooting my opponent.
I know that all the mercs can be played either way, and the chart definitely has some flaws in it. My point is that some of them are more suited to defense or offense than others. Aura, for example, has a more campy healing ability, while Phoenix’s pulse is more mobile, making him better at supporting a team on the move, which is what the attacking team is usually doing (moving).
I call myself a noob, mostly because I’m outclassed by most of the people on the forum. I’m level 11, according to the game I have about 150 hours, but Steam says I have 300 hours. I started playing in July of 2015, but I quit playing for about 5 months, and when I came back my level was reset to Level One, so I’m more inclined to believe Steam.

Your use of rational argument astounds me. I have no words.
Well, if our posts had any sort of an argument, what you just said here would make some sense.
I was going to actually post something else than just gifs but then I realized that your fascination of dividing mercs in each class type evenly to offensive and defensive camps is just so forced.
I was being sarcastic. If you don’t like what I said, slap a disagree on it and go on, I don’t care. But going out of your way to post rude stuff kinda makes me mad.
