NETVARs and updating Brink

(DouglasDanger) #21

Why the belligerent attitude, JeP? I don’t know much about psn or xbl. I have a ps3, and I some times play games using psn, but I don’t know how it works.

(JeP) #22

Cause I don’t know why they would talk about a feature when thinking “XBox and PC will include these but not PS3, lol”.

Plus I think they’ve talked about MS and Sony’s testing for console patching, or something like that, elsewhere.

(DouglasDanger) #23

Yeah, I know there is a big deal for “title updates” and patches and whatnot. It takes a lot of time and money. These necvars mean SD can change things on the fly. I’m just kind of confused how that will work with consoles, because they don’t have dedicated servers.

(Whydmer) #24

They don’t have dedicated servers for MP-gameplay. They do have dedicated servers that the game will check in with when the game starts up on your xbox/PS3 assuming you are online.

(Linsolv) #25

But… Treyarch did that with Black Ops. So, it’s not wildly unbelievable. Of course I assume they’ve got it worked out, but that doesn’t mean I know.

Every time you switch games on the 360, there is a mini “update” - it is these files that it is checking.

:stroggtapir:[/QUOTE]

My old Xbox used to choke on those updates for some reason.

Arrived here looking for the answer to wtf are necvars, netvars makes much more sense
Gracias Jared

(SphereCow) #28

I believe net vars are similar to .DEF files in ETQW where you could change the stats of a weapon, and have the shotgun, say, fire 20 pellets instead of 8, get headshots, and do 4 dmg instead of 9.

Except you can do this over the net.

I wonder if SD guys can run a development kit over a network, that is, test stuff, and reload files with other players in the game.

(Cankor) #29

Assuming there are Master servers which gather things like global stats (needed at a minimum for challenge leaderboards). These master servers could load the Netvars.

They don’t have to load every time, you just set a flag when your system is updated, then it checks the flag and if you are current you’re good, if you are out of date you are updated.

It would be silly to update them every time you play.

this, plus the fact it’s a tiny txt file, maybe 8 - 10 KB or less even

Sorry to Necro this thread but I was just wondering if any of the Netvars will affect AI-bot play. If the opinions that I have been reading from people who are at least claiming to have played the game already hold true and the AI is not a challenge at all, and even one or two bots on a team may be a handicap (pure speculation of a pessimistic kind) - are there Netvar settings that will be able to effect changes?

(DouglasDanger) #32

There is a vid floating around of a guy playing hard mode. He keeps walking out into enemy fire and getting murdered. He died more than a dozen times in 10 minute video.

To stay on-topic, and reply to you, I imagine SD will keep an eye on thing and use the netvars to tweak things.

(Whydmer) #33

I know that I am a little more than 24 hours away from seeing what the bots can do first hand, they may be more than up to the task on hard mode (against me they may be more than up to the task on easy mode.)

I would hope that any dude just ambling out into enemy fire would get mosed down, but some of the vids I saw showed that the Ai on offense was having true difficulities mounting an attack. It would be way cool if the difficulty levels could be tweaked if needed.

(Gamer2Gamers) #34

aka stick it out guys cause if something sucks they can easily fix to make a nice balanced competitive game which is 10 out of 10 in my books

wonder if that means they can do AI adjustments too?

(Cankor) #35

There’s a big difference between smarter bots and more accurate bots.

(throwback8) #36

I think this is an excellent thing and will help a great deal with the future balancing of Brink.
