Na db pug

(H0RSE) #21

I tried to participate, but I was essentially told I couldn’t because I wouldn’t sign on to TS…

Defeating the purpose of a pug.

Sorry guys, I have been having internet problems over the last 45 mins. Silly comcast…

Ok, finally got my modem back up and working without crapping out. But now I have to head to a quick goodbye party for a friend. Be back soon. Sorry I’m missing the festivities.

I hope to be online in 30-45 mins once I’m back if anyone’s still around. :frowning:

really don’t see how…it’s not a scrim or an exhibition mach. It’s a pug on a closed pre-alpha game, primarily for testing purposes. The very fact that you are trying to setup this match prior to it taking place, with specific parameters to be net, kinda defeats the purpose of it being a “pick up game”…

(tangoliber) #25

I’m not able to participate, but just so you know, pugs are not the same as pubs. Maybe the name “pick up game” does not accurately explain what it is, but the term is consistent across all competitive games. They are games where everyone is communicating and trying to adhere to an overall team strategy. They always require voice communication. In this case, it would be for getting a taste of how the game might play in a more organized setting.
Here is a site explaining how it works in Tribes: Ascend : http://playapug.com/

If that is truly hat pugs are in the competitive gaming realm, then they could not have chosen a worse term to describe it, since in many sports, pugs are regarded as more of spontaneous grouping of players, with a more of a “for fun” goal. The description you provided, was essentially a scrim match with random players.

This still does not explain why TS is a “must,” and why because I chose to not use TS, (and only that reason) I was essentially “booted” from testing/playing. Why such strict guildlines? perhaps for a released title, but a pre-alpha? It’s not like I could simply choose another populated server to play in…

but whatever - more and more people will eventually come aboard leading to launch, and I’ll have have populated servers where I can play and feel comfortable.

I’ve never heard of ‘pug’ used outside of an ad hoc competitive style match- in gaming at least. I always thought the rest was pub or clan battle lol. The purpose of what we were doing was to see how the game plays in a scrim. Anyway thanks to everyone who showed up! We had some good games and also discovered some important issues that occur in a fairly balanced 5v5 setup with open VOIP comms. Let’s do it again soon.

@ HORSE; we were trying to conduct a test under specific conditions in order to get accurate results. It’s not like anyone was refusing to let you play, but you were refusing to participate using the rules we were setting for the test. No hard feelings, there’s plenty of pub games every day anyway- but the test we were conducting was to get valuable feedback for the game.

h0rse… you dont have to come on voip for friendly pug games…it does help to know whats going on but until there is voip in game so you can listen…just like any other game you’ve played as a team, you’re a valued member of the community. i got a bit sad when you left. hope to see you next time.

The reason for me not joining TS, was because I feel uncomfortable around people I unfamiliar with - it doesn’t matter if I’m talking or not, just hearing them is enough. It’s like when you go to a party and you don’t know anyone - you’re not talking to anyone, but you still feel uncomfortable.

One of the big reason I enjoy PC games so much, is because of the seclusion built into them. I love type chat. Not having talk or hear people is a godsend. VOIP in-game is fairly new for PC games, whereas on console, it is much more social, and why on that medium, appear offline is a godsend. I’m just a very introverted person.

(INF3RN0) #30

We just decided to make Sundays the official pug day. Also hoping that we can mix in the EU crowd towards the end of their play sessions as well?

(AKAMrSmiley) #31

Horrible day bro, Sunday = busiest day for someone who works at a restaurant, meaning smiley definitely won’t be attending any of those PUGs.

(INF3RN0) #32

We can also have plenty of unofficial pugs whenever 10 people want to have one. I’m sure you will get your chance shmilee!

Hope there will be one for EU testing as well

Aside / off topic:
PUG, meaning Pick-up group, is used in MMOs. And in something like WoW you might chat in the ingame text but expecting voice comms is way beyond a pugger… in fact any sort of help is not expected from a pug and kicking is frequent to replace a pugger with another. Generally a pug is a group of complete strangers that will run a dungeon and then break up.

In the MMO sphere it’s basically a pub (although I don’t think ‘pub’ is used at all).

(Seanza) #36

Pugs/gathers/whatever you want to call it are generally used to emulate a competitive environment within gaming without having the commitment of playing in a team. Sure it’s soooo much better when everybody is on comms together, but I think it’s pretty harsh to shun somebody out simply because they choose not to join. I’ve never agreed with the “must be on vent/ts/mumble” rule for any pug channels and I’ve never enforced it in any of the gather channels I’ve ran. I encourage it, but I find people will go on there if they want to, and once they get to know people better.

(Anti) #37

I find it very much depends on the game. In the Tribes Ascend pugs I play there is no way it would work without all players on mumble with mics ready to go, the game in teams like this simply requires way too much communication to emulate a ‘match’ experience.

That can be very nerve racking I know, chatting to people you don’t know, but it’s not worth worrying about too much as you’re all there for the same reason and generally folks are quite helpful.

(light_sh4v0r) #38

Never seen you in the T:A playapug mumble Anti ;).

(Anti) #39

I am there pretty often, captain quite a bit too…much to the annoyance of those I pick

(INF3RN0) #40

To me not wanting to openly communicate and the attitude “it’s just alpha who even cares” means that they don’t want to help. I was really hoping to simulate a balanced match environment the best I could, and having one team that didn’t include an equal effort from all players meant it would be an unreliable test in the first place. I don’t care if someone doesn’t want to talk, but I ask they at least be there to listen so they can effectively interact with the comms of their teammates. Makes sense to me, especially since this kind of setup is going to reveal a lot of things you won’t get from a pub for those exact reasons.
