Musings on basic character development issues

(Senethro) #81

No, I want to play the game! I find the intrinsic rewards of the game more valuable than the extrinsic rewards. (heh, look that up developer wannabes)

(Weeohhweeohh) #82

The only real way I can reply to this is as such. This is their intellectual property. They designed it how they wanted. It’s unfortunate that they didn’t consult you or your list of demands. Just buy the game on PC and Mod it how you see fit.
Well since you can give extra xp to those characters it isn’t as bad. I don’t think SD is going to answer you though. You’ll be waiting a while. I also doubt their answer is going to be too different then what you’ve already gotten.

That being said, I love reading about designer insights. So I am entirely sincere in saying Good Luck with getting a response.
I really hope they’ve got a magic bullet answer.

If it takes 5 hours to level a character from 0-20 with extra XP then I’ll surely admit to being a concern babby. If it takes 30, which is about what it took for me to get to last unlock in CoD4 and BC2, I’ll be disappointed.

I don’t see the value of character building in MP-FPS.

Senethro, this is perhaps the single main reason as to why the points made by Tokamak among others in this discussion are white noise to you. If your filter does not allow for value in character building in MP-FPS games then it will be hard to relate to any points made based on the presence of value there.

When I first learned about all Brink was trying to do my first critical thought was that all SD had to do was screw up in one aspect of this (from my perspective) ground breaking game, and it could be blasted by reviews and FPS fans as gimmicky. Then I thought about how even if they do everything right, by bringing in so many different components it might be that it still won’t appeal to a component of the audience who really like the way things are in COD games.

I enjoy creating a character, whether that character is on a piece of paper, in an MMO, or even a semi-RPG like ME2. I also enjoy the idea at least of making one in an FPS. It may turn out that SD has made that process into a clunky one that diminishes my potential enjoyment, but at least at this point I can look forward to engaging with this game in a different possibly fuller manner than I engage with COD or BFBC2. The potential work and tension and limitations make for intriguing possibilities of long term flexibility. And when I want something that is more FPS Traditional with greater immediate flexibility I can always fire up a Battlefied game.

Toka, I found a good turn of phrase in another thread.

It’s still an increment towards compromised gameplay for the sake of grinding and unnecessary extrinsic rewards.

(tokamak) #86

Leaving out such costs would compromise the gameplay, and you know what? It would most likely lower the bar even further and make the game even more accessible as well. I refer back to the original phrase.

(Whydmer) #87

If the intrinsic rewards are there for you, then this should be a fairly light penalty.

Everyone loves theory character building. I love my Biotic emphasis, cooldown minimizing Vanguard.

What I want is the ability to rapidly prototype a build without downtime.

(Senethro) #89

You think it would make the game more accessible? Surely a good thing!

Two friends having a conversation:

Friend one: “Bro, you gotta check this book out. It’s all about the United State’s Merchant Marines in WW2. It was thrilling! It was all about one USMM ship that took out a German sub with their AA gun when they popped up top side to secure their cargo.”

Friend two: “Oh hell ya bro that sounds thrilling!!! I will read the book but I really hope it involves Indiana Jones and donkeys.”

Friend one: “Well, its a historical account of the USMM in WW2. It doesn’t involve Indiana Jones or donkeys.”

Friend two: “I get what you are saying and I’m gonna read it, but I want it to have Indiana Jones and donkeys.”

Friend one: “Ya, about that. It’s not gonna have those things.”

Friend two: “No, I understand. It should have Indiana Jones and donkeys and if it doesn’t, I’m not going to truly enjoy myself.”

Friend one: “This isn’t the book for you then buddy.”

Friend two: “Ya, but I’m going to read it anyways. I really want Indiana Jones and donkeys to be in it.”

Ok, you really knocked this one out of the park. In making a post this ironic you’re pretending to not have read that I enjoy the core game type and intend to purchase, but am somewhat anticipating irritation by not being able to click a menu button whenever I want. You are pretending to turn that into a “this game is not for you, critics” with an implicit “LIKE IT OR LEAVE IT” along with the 3 other people making that fallacy in this thread. Loved the bro language and interests, great stuff.

(Weeohhweeohh) #92

You are still upset about the lack of Indiana Jones and donkeys. You just don’t see it.

(Senethro) #93

Come on, you can tell me. Hairdog, signature text about ninjas, the sig image is like a story in itself and I’m not quite sure I’m cool enough to “get” it. Its like the finest vintages of old memes and terrible crap. Everything you post is ironic and should be read the opposite way, right?

(Jess Alon) #94

Look forward to playing those bodytypes. Do you go to a candy store and grab one of everything? You can always WAIT til later and actually look forward to your next choice.

(Mad Hatter) #95

I’m not one of those 3 people am I? Because if so then I came off all wrong. My only point really is that if it is an inconvenience to you, then it will probably be a very small one. The system they’ve got going on here seems much better than the one that CoD uses, for example. (Really hate bringing up CoD all the time, but it’s a quick and easy comparison that pretty much everybody knows.)

Once you unlock a gun or an attachment it is unlocked for all of your characters. You don’t need to go out of your way and complete annoying or tedious tasks to upgrade your abilities (destroy a sentry gun when NOBODY uses sentry guns, for example).

All it is is having to go down a single level if you want to re-spec. Unless you’re super indecisive and re-spec several times in a row I don’t foresee any “grinding.”

(Weeohhweeohh) #96

Hair dog because it is adorable.
I personally really like ninjas.
Sig image was something .thetank. quickly whipped up for me (thanks!). The story wasn’t meant for people to “get”. Weeohhweeohh comes from Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. I found it hilarious that one of the characters basically just said weeohhweeohh throughout the whole movie. It was not my intention to make everyone laugh at my name, but that I laugh at it.

(Senethro) #97

I’d ideally see changing perk/bodysize as being as significant a decision as changing class. Something to be done often as the situation requires.

Super indecisive? What a negative way to describe being curious and wishing to explore alternatives.

I mean, what happens if you just misclick and set one of your perks wrong during re-speccing? Do you have to respec twice and go down another level? Hope the menu is good.

I preferred CoD’s rubbishy mini-objectives because they only had to be done once and were usually for cosmetic options. I can tolerate grind if theres an endstate.

(tokamak) #98

But not curious enough to be willing to put any work in for it.

(Dormamu) #99

One week after Brink release, we will see: “Best Leveling Builds”; “Best SP Builds”; “Best MP Builds”; “Buy my Brink Leveling book - only 5EU”;
“- Need 1 Medic - Restoration Build for Container City, or Operative DPS!!!”, “Is Brink the end of WoW Domination?!?”
One more reason to release the SDK (i had a bad experience with a Dark-Templar in Age of Conan - respec/grind for money/respec/grind…nope) I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

(Senethro) #100

What a cruel mocking use of “work” when talking to the underemployed!
