oh no i dont expect to get a job making maps for that lol, i wish, but even then i’d still rather do my other job (its easier than mapping to me). I was just letting him no, that there are jobs that pay alot of money lol

perhaps after some in depth 1 on 1 talks with a mapper or a mapping team you could agree on some final plans for the map and a final design and depending on complexity texture themes and new models

then agree on a set fee and timeline for the project so both parties can be asured that the map will fetch a reasonable sum of money for the effort involved and also be asured that the mapper wont go slow or invent hours worked to get free $$

then the mapper/meppers can give blocked out version of the map to demonstrate gameflow… parts of the map with no objective entites to make it unplayable could be pk3’d to demonstrating the look while in game to the comisioner as well as screenshots and videos

then we can all be happy and after the lawers take care of the formalites we can all play a nice map for ET

Actually, the issue is more of non-mappers having no idea what time commitments go into making a map. Based on the $20 offer, I’m thinking that 8u4dinner was thinking 4-5 hours, which may have been all the time Loffy put in. Personally, I wouldn’t give up 4-5 hours of my time to someone else for $20, but that’s me.

if we look at the reality i think the amount of work needed to go into a map will make it far to expensive for almost anyone to spend having a map made that by the right of the game will become total free to distrubute

the only posible way i can see is to make a map then perhaps sell advertising space on the map for clan posters etc but these could easily be changed with a small pk3 so no real point and would probably lose a lot of the look of the map

Yes, that’s why I either volunteer to help someone with a map (e.g., Decerto) or completely refuse to get involved.

I agree with most of the sentiments you’ve put forward in this thread Iffy. However, I think some mappers might be willing to take on a project for a somewhat nominal fee - if you’re a uni student with a reasonable amount of spare time and you quite enjoy making maps I think it could be okay to get paid to work on a map you think will be decent, even if the money is more a token amount than anything else.

(Ifurita) #27

Quite possibly. My point was that few, if any, people are going make any sort of reasonable hourly rate based on time required and people’s willingness to pay. If you’re willing to help someone out, great. I’ve certainly done that, pro bono, for Decerto. In my particular case, I turned down the offer of compensation because 1) is wasn’t that much (for me), 2) I thought it would have set up a bad dynamic between me and the team for whom I was doing the mapping. Ultimately, I got to try out a few new things, they got a branded map, and except for some headaches, it was a good experience.

Oh yeah, I totally agree with you in that I doubt anyone will be willing to pay what would be a ‘fair rate’ for time put in.

Interesting point regards money possibly changing the dynamic between you and mo, something I hadn’t considered.

In that case, I was worried that the exchange of funds would create an expectation of obligation that I didn’t want … meaning that I wanted an out if things didn’t work out well plus I wanted to make sure that I retained artistic license, which once someone pays you, they have a lot more say in the finished product. To be sure, there were some very rocky parts, but we got everything worked out.
