Map Basic Requirements

(Slippery Jim) #21

Very cool tip. I will have to try that out later. Thanks.

(Thej) #22

Cant we turn this into a sticky thread?
Would help out peeps that are having ptoblems getting the game to work

(fat boost) #23

well if this is the OFFICIAL~! noob thread I’ll post my question.

I can’t load my map. I do Devmap “whatever” and I get “whatever” cannot be found. When I do Devmap Goldrush, it works fine. Me are confused.

PS - Yes, I put in the right folder, though I admit it took me a little while.

(Blockbuster) #24

even dumber question to you… have you compiled your map?

(Shenanigan) #25

Ah, thanks Jim! It works smooth as a bell right now.

(MrU) #26

Tnx Jim. Works like a charm :).

(MytMowse) #27

Here is something that got my curiosity.

When looking at the goldrush.map you can see a lot of different color blocks in the air, but they are huge blocks. What are they and what do they do and are they required?

(Slippery Jim) #28

I do Devmap “whatever” and I get “whatever” cannot be found.

fat boost, as blockbuster asked, have you compiled your map in the 3 step process? I originally thought all I had to do was select “(single test) -light -fast” but that was wrong since it was not creating my .bsp file. I come from a Worldcraft/Swat 3 background so doing the compile in several passes is strange to me.

Also make sure you type all three of these things into console when you want to run your map:

/sv_pure 0
/g_gametype 2
/devmap your_map_name

Ah, thanks Jim! It works smooth as a bell right now.

You are all welcome. I am a complete newbie with RTCW/ET mapping but thought I would share the little I have learned. Thanks to the various other threads in this forum and the people who wrote them.

Ctrl+alt+left click, then hit N to find out what they are.

Well, that is what it used to be in the old versions. Not sure about the new, can’t get anything to work with XP Pro…

Although I have gained alot of expirence in rebooting my computer

On the subject of max/min co-ordinates do the have to have equal co-ordinates for negative and positive.

i.e. -1000/1000 or -6500/6500

Also is there any easy way of creating a landscape instead of making single brushes for each bit?

(Slippery Jim) #31

On the subject of max/min co-ordinates do the have to have equal co-ordinates for negative and positive.

Doubt it.

Also is there any easy way of creating a landscape instead of making single brushes for each bit?

You mean like gtkgensurf?

:bump:

(MadAxeMan) #32

I really can’t get on with gensurf, just doesn’t seem random enough and you only seem to be able to set one texture…

EasyGen seems the best way to generate landscapes at the moment. Better looking landscapes and ability to paint three textures.

Having made that comparison I should add I’m try to produce a mountain in the middle of the map, so not an average landscape…

(Black Death) #33

Since this is a newbie thread, I’ll ask my newbie question!

I want to do this:

I want one part of a brush coalked, and one part textured. If I select the brush with shift + leftclick, it textures/caulks the entire brush. So how do I select a part of a brush?

(MadAxeMan) #34

I’m also a newbie at this but I think you want to create a patch to do this. Check out the docs on patching (best way to start) and try out all the commands - you can do some extremely feaky sh#t. You should be able to do the above no problem.

(Shallow) #35

Select an individual brush face for texturing by using Ctrl+Shift+Left Click in the 3D view. Select multiple faces with Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Left Click.

(Black Death) #36

Aha! Thanks.

(mewse) #37

i believe i’ve followed all of the directions in this thread, but ET is still freezing up when i try to enter the limbo menu.

i’ve got the red spawn and the blue spawn, both invulnerable and setactive

i’ve got two team_wolf_objectives, one set to default_axis and one set to default_allies

i’ve got an info_player_deathmatch just in case it gets used

and i’ve set the worldspawn set up with the mapcoordsmins and mapcoordsmaxs

have i missed something startlingly obvious? i’m feeling frustrated.

i’ve uploaded the map file here

(Prophesy) #38

As Theisy asked:
On the subject of max/min co-ordinates do the have to have equal co-ordinates for negative and positive?

Anyone know the answer to this?

I know I have to make the size of my map square.

I already started on my map, and it would be awful lot of work to move all stuff so that the center of the map is at 0

(sock) #39

Nope you will not need to move your map around to fit the command map. It is very simply, just create a square brush underneath your map and read the topleft and bottomright editor co-ordinates. Create 2 new keys in your worldspawn and hey presto …

(Theisy) #40

OK another question here lol

I have completed my terrain on Easygen and it looks pretty much how I want it too.

However how do I export the map. I click on export map and then on continue but it says I need to select a template. I then click on template but there are no options.

Remember this is my third day of map making lol
