Limited character customization (why?)

(tokamak) #21

Those colour schemes have been designated by real artists, don’t allow people to confront others with their own bad taste.

(DemiGod) #22

Who’s to say everyone has bad taste? If someone wants an outfit entirely in Puce, that’s their prerogative.

(Artheval_Pe) #23

It’s not. It’s just mathematics. With a limited set of variables, you can have a lot of variation. With only ten parameters that can have ten values each, it gives you ten billion variations.
I also wished the color wheel was still available, theres some outfits that I like that don’t have matching colors with some other piece of clothing I like.

On the other hand, maybe they do match, I have terrible taste.
I suspect the color wheel on the dev videos works the exact same way as the color options on the current game.

(DemiGod) #25

I remember seeing outfits in the commercials on GameStop tv’s that are not currently in this game. One in particular that I wanted to use that isn’t there.

SD made Resistance and Security very different towards each other, so both factions have their own identities (Resistance: Urban, Crazy, Greenish, Reddish etc.)(Security: Police, Clean, Dark Clothing etc.). So, for me, customization good and it’s the way I like it.

(scub) #27

like already mentioned compared, to ALL other FPS in recent years BRINK by far exceeded customization. so why are people complaining about it so much.

like my mom always told me “give someone an inch, but they want a yard”

pretty soon people are going to ask why they can’t paint their toe nails in the game.

Because there’s no option to remove sho- I have a new idea!

Seriously though, I see where -everyone- is coming from. The customisation is -not- revolutionary, however it is still pretty impressive. I can also see where SD’s obscure advertising mislead many customers to believe that a million customisable variations is an impressive amount as in terms of technicalities, a guy can be dressed the same way as you in every way, but he chose to go for a buzzcut rather than dreads.

I think personally the colour customisation really needs to be based on sliders and wheels, rather than preset selections. To everyone who thinks that the colour-variation’ll make it hard to distinguish enemies and allies, I’m pretty sure that enemies are shaded red (though this may just be me, don’t ask!)

SD are partially to blame, though under the eyes of the technical sense, they’ve done nothing wrong as far as the customisation is concerned.

(Skunkee) #29

It’s really not a big deal to me, but they COULD have so much more.

(ithurtsus) #30

I feel the same, you’re given these lines of how much customization there is but when you get in a game its 8 cops vs 8 dudes in tire armor with hockey masks. I’m just glad I didn’t pick one of the really screwed up body types when I made my character. I don’t care to look like a childrens nightmare story.
The answer to your question is that Brink is a highly stylised game and they wanted players to customise within that style and not break the art direction with too many choices.
I know they did, but that would only explain why they didn’t for example include a full colour palette or gave us the ability to determine the length of our hair.
I’m happy they forced it within the art style. I just don’t understand why they gave us that little options to choose from, especially compared to what I think I saw in earlier footage.

Of course. I know. I played the game to death.
I’m not saying it had better character customization. Oh, no! Brink’s is the best I’ve seen in a FPS so far. I only thought it was ironic when I realised UT3 allowed ways of customization that Brink doesn’t.

I was under the impression the colour wheel had way more colours in it.

Thanks for your long post. If you expected something along the lines of APB however, you’ve simply been misinformed.
It was already very clear that the freedom of customization in Brink would be narrowed down to what the designers thought would fit in the art style. And I’m very happy about that.

But while I think the options for customization are great, I do feel like it doesn’t have as much content as I expected. I’d expected about twice as much.

The weapon customization is just sick. And I don’t think it would add anything significant to the game by allowing to choose from more skins. They are already made to fit your side. Who’s gonna see the details?
You can already shape your gun a lot with attachments (of which there are quite a lot) and you can even choose a muzzle flash (equals customization overkill).

Like some others here, I would indeed like to see more content in the upcoming DLC.
