If Brink's multiplayer uses P2P...

(system) #21

I will happily request my money back if there is no server browser and the game uses P2P on PC.

There seems to be a flood of people thinking PC is P2P, any reason for this?

(SuperWaz) #23

I said misleading/vague. By saying early on that “we’re supporting a traditional dedicated server system” they got PC gamers to buy into that statement and stop asking questions about how players will connect.

The more we’ve seen and heard through development, the more questions have been raised about connectivity, and they’ve avoided answering the questions each time they are brought up. I can’t think of a single reason why they would avoid answering these questions. Can you?

If it turns out that P2P is involved with the PC version, then no matter how you look at it, they have attempted to mislead the users by firstly mentioning dedicated servers, and secondly by not answering our pertinent questions.

We know how consoles will work:

“we’re peer-to-peer and are definitely focusing on quality of service for all our matchmaking. We’re also keying our matchmaking on friends, so that should help give console players control over the quality of the connections”.

Why don’t we know the same concerning the PC?

I just don’t see it as realistic move for them to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in monthly server costs without a monthly fee or some sort of deal where the only servers we can rent are restricted to 1 GSP.

I mean how else can you blend single player, coop and versus without constantly being on a server? The easiest way to accomplish this is to make each player act as a server and then have it migrate hosts to the best connection… maybe even to a dedicated connection at one point.

In all honesty I’m completely content with this method if it’s how it does work.

(SuperWaz) #26

Even if you can still play on private dedicated servers paid for by gaming clans or individuals?

(SuperWaz) #27

Bump. I’m saying it’s time Splash Damage answered our questions. Go me!

I know where you live boys, and I’m handy with the SMART system so your garden fences aren’t going to keep me out.

Dedicated server FAQ

(LyndonL) #29

Awesome find mate. Steam delivered too AWESOME! HLDSUpdate tool is great.

(DarkangelUK) #30

There’s a thread on the dedicated server FAQ here

(SuperWaz) #31

Kudos to SD and Bethesda for finally releasing some info. Sounds like dedicated servers will be the order of the day.

Still doesn’t answer how the connectivity works with regards to drop in/drop out though, or whether P2P will be involved with PC if dedicated servers aren’t available.

Anyway, glad we got some good news!

(LyndonL) #32

Yes it does. The FAQ very clearly states that you can set your server up for a variety of different game modes: CAMPAIGN (meaning it’s not P2P), Objective, Stopwatch, and (the one that surprised me) Challenge mode.

(riptide) #33

That doesn’t clearly explain if there is or isn’t p2p options and if it takes over somebodies dedicated server and if they have control over who does or doesn’t play there.

(LyndonL) #34

You have to specifically set your dedi server up for Campaign, so if you don’t want ppl using it for campaign don’t set it up that way. All servers have control over who does/doesn’t play on them. And I would assume there’d be a fallback with P2P if you can’t find an adequate Dedi server. There’d have to be, if for nothing else but for local play on a LAN.

(SuperWaz) #35

I’m guessing the launch will see ALOT of password protected servers with only a few people playing on them. There must be an alternative for those who are struggling to find a server and don’t want to pay for one.
