I absolutely hate the new audio reverb. Any way to disable it?

(AnonOmis1000) #21

Honestly it’s sounds better. Fire the SMG-9 or M9 in that little lighted room where the EV manes the first turn on Chapel. They sound amazing with the reverb.

I thought this was my issue, too. Now I’m back to about the same FPS after cycling through configs a bit. Go figure.

(Naonna) #23

@FerfyDerf - config commands please.

(FerfyDerf) #24

@Naonna No config comands, just configs. I used sick newb6’s config or something like that from the /r/dirtybombconfigs subreddit.

(Galavant) #25

Hey there, we talked a bit about performance considerations above, I am quite positive a change of 10 FPS is too much for it being entirely due to the reverb system, especially because as I mentioned, V-Bear was running in a sort of “muted” but not disabled state before the update took place. Hopefully the issue is indeed in some configs that changed, let me know if you manage to find out.

(SereneFlight) #26

According to the devs, the new sound system uses significantly less cpu ressources than the one it replaced. Since it’s an in-house system, and this is the first release into the wild, it might have some baby hiccups. Or your issue might be completely unrelated to the sound system.
Nope, i was perfectly fine with my 55-60 FPS yesterday. Now its at 45-50 after the update, with the only major change to anything that could impact my computer being the new sound.
It might be just me but frames have always dropped for me a little bit after every update for couple days… and hotfix too… yup… for some bloody reason…
Correction on succint’s post: V-Bear is already out with the new update, but yes, we’re now focusing on improving directional audio with a better occlusion system, this needs some figuring out to ensure performance won’t suffer too much as a result of an audio improvement. V-Bear had priority as simpler to implement and for it being a missing feature, while the occlusion system won’t be a new feature but will require us to sort out loads of edge cases to ensure everything is squeaky clean.
I understand seeing these polish passes might make you feel as if positional audio communication wasn’t the priority for us but trust me, it is literally on the top of the list and will be addressed, V-Bear had to happen before it as adding the feature aftewards would have been messier :)
Ah yes, thank you. I didn’t read the patch noted carefully enough haha.

So, when do you actually plan on fixing audio then ? Directional audio aside, what about:

-Sound cut offs (when you cant even hear someone shooting next to you).

-Smooth transitions (because right now is just feel like there is only sound for left, right and middle, it doesnt even feel like a “real” 3D audio).

-Audio rebalancing, so i can hear mg, footsteps or people shooting at me when there is something going around the map. Now that you added reverb its even worse, i cant even tell where the sniper is because all i hear is “whiping” when he misses me. I also dont enjoy explosives muffling all the sounds or air support abilities being a mess that its hard to tell where something will explode.

I dont understand why sound in DB is such a mess, all i know is that a lot of games on UE sounds just fine. Every single time i play DB i rage because of sound, its this bad so i hope that we wont need to wait another year for another reverb patch.

(AnonOmis1000) #30

Sounds is fine for me. The only time I ever have sounds not work is when I’m soectating, abd then changing who I’m special fixes it.

I use a pair of surround sound headphones and directional sound works pretty well. (I play a lot of CS GO, where directional sound is huge)

(RedBeard) #31

Cause reverb is how humans hear everything. Dev’s we been having talks for as while now…

(Galavant) #32

to tackle things 1 by 1:

 • Sound cut offs: seems to affect some specs, really hard to repro, hence problematic to fix.
 • Smooth transitions: feel free to test this with a friend, have him walking around you has he shoots or triggering barks, if you experience any issue you can pair with a video, send it my way and I’ll look into it.
 • Audio rebalancing: this is work we’re constantly doing, the reverb system is not designed to affect sound over distance, it just adds to the source, snipers should sound exactly the same as they did in the previous patch outdoors and have a bit of a reflection added if indoors.

Lastly, DB is a particular beast for sound with long range abilities, bombs airstrikes and such all crunched into fairly small maps, as a result we often have to tackle things one at a time as trying to, for example, just make footsteps louder, would result in others sounds becoming not prominent enough.

(xAvenger) #33

It is a new system, subject to modification. I like it and don’t experience slowdowns. Just takes a little getting used to.

(FalC_16) #34

tl;dr I kinda like the M4 sound in underground. They could make it default on all maps ^^

(neverplayseriou) #35

@FalC_16 that’s the only gun I actually still wanna test with the new sound since the m4 before the update sounded quite crappy.
