HP Bar color change

I liked Quake 3’s colour changing crosshair to let you know at a glance how you’re doing for health. White for ok, yellow for taken a couple hits and gradually to red for low (I think this was an OSP thing, RtCW had it as well).

There is certainly a lot to be said for the simplicity of the TF2 interface and how much information it actually conveys using that simple interface. I really like interfaces that convey large amounts of information easily and intuitively. Even the pointers to the stolen briefcase and the icon representing it’s current standing are well done.

I do like the changing crosshair colours too. Again: not game changers but little information hints that almost subconsciously give you a good idea of what’s going on.

This is drifting a bit away from the user’s actual HUD element, but in TF2 the medic has an option that automatically makes teammates call out for medic at a certain user-defined percentage. I never medic’d in competitions or PUGs (soldier all the way ), but I know in pubs it was useful to set it to 50%, because you knew who was getting hurt and were able to judge where the most action was easily as you spawned in.

I think QL does this for default now, but I much prefer the setting that changes it based on your damage done to an opponent (red for direct, yellow for medium damage, aqua for nicking them, etc).

Yeah it’s a really great community made design and beats the heck out of the default TF2 HUD; there’s a few other really great ones that are a little less minimalistic, but they just don’t have the polish that this one has.

I prefer to use the hitsound to determine how much damage the shot did and the grunt noise they make when hit to determine how low they are, seems to be plenty indicators as it is without needing the crosshair to tell me as well which could be be used for other stuff.

I just don’t like the idea of my crosshair changing color for long periods of times; I have it set to aqua/purple and hate it to switch for long periods of times as I try to regain control of areas. I much prefer having it change color for just a split second.

Maybe there could be an option to keep the crosshair the same color, but have a circular bar next to it to display health. (for example see Black light retribution - there you have stamina on the right, health? on the left and a ring of ammo)
