Founder's Gear Update - 11th March 2015

(BomBaKlaK) #21

Well I want to see this in action before moaning about

(Mustang) #22

Yea this is one of my concerns, finally get a badass skin, never use it due to crappy weapons/augments.

(ToonBE) #23

If I were a founder (and I would be if I still could) then I would want an awesome skin ingame that you can use with whatever loadout. Other players need to go “wooow look at his skin… He is a founder… drewl

The augments are unnecessary imo…

Exactly, and the military skin are so common … nothing really bad ass, so just useless, as this cards …

(MaverickZero) #25

Skyhammer one is the most useful in any and all modes ~ loadout+skin-wise.
We would be much better off getting the skins separately. Then get random rare loadouts based on the founders package.

Losing the skin because you prefer a different loadout sucks. Or getting stuck with a loadout that you despise just for the look you like.

This isn’t great tbh. We still have time before things get set in stone so please consider NOT going through with things as they are now. The skins being separate would be SOOOOO much better and I think founders would universally agree.

(Brinkman) #26

Kinda weird system.

yep. pretty much sums it up.

(Njsfirth) #28

Idk, those skins look cool and the loadouts (weapon wise) seem to be the most ideal for each merc. Stop whining. I’d be happy to have one, unfortunately i found out too late about dirty bomb to get in on the founders stuff :<

(spookify) #29

Ouch…

We are whining but also stating constructive criticism… The weapons are the normal guns we are used to but the perks are not ideal. In fact some of the perks above are just plan useless…

(ThiagoScala) #30

hum… i got the legendary pack, i don’t need to choose

btw, i prefer only the skin, then i can put in any card i want

(xdc) #31

that’s how all cards should look. looks like someone on the art team actually put time into these… nicejob

Totally agree. These and the previews of the weekend test Obsidian ones look 100x better than the ones we currently have in game.

That being said, same problem with these as with the obsidian ones: very disappointed to see a kick-ass exclusive skin (and model mesh in this case) being tied to an actual weapon loadout and augment set. As others have said, what’s the point of getting cool exclusive swag if you end up having to sideline it in order to play with a loadout that is closer to your playstyle? :o

If skins and weapons / augments loadouts remain tied together, I really don’t see as big a market for custom skins as invariably some players will end up having to sacrifice looks for gameplay and people that would have bought skins if they were independent won’t do so simply because the skin they like is not available with their favorite loadout. You’re basically writing off the market segment of people who like skins enough to buy them, but not enough to sacrifice their gameplay preferences for them in addition to their hard-earned cash. Maybe there is an economic model I’m missing here, but as it stands it looks like a less-than-optimal business plan… :frowning:

I’m not sure the skins are tied to cards, skins are likely a store item and pickable like they were in Alpha

or certainly should be

I’d be cool with it either way, but it may be easier to associate skins with their augments. e.g. Splash Damage skins = Founders Cards + augments = expect SD Fragger to be using the MG Nests, or SD Sawbonez to be trying to melee more often.

Sadly ever since the loadout cards made their appearance, the only way skins can be picked is through the cards. If they intend for the two to exist independently, why did they need to remove the existing cosmetic customization menus? Hopefully they are still trying to figure out exactly how to make the two co-exist, but the signs are not encouraging…

(rookie1) #36

Tbh I don’t really like the Founder’s skins (theme, look) ,would prefer a special customizable option for founder only (like eyes and/or head gear) and all other part of skins could be pay to have .
So I would pay for a look that I would like and wear my eg. my very cool founder sunglass  (@ all time)
Fragger is the only one That is more ok compare to the other ones the way he look ^^

(Bangtastic) #37

actually we do now for a long time now, which mercs as founder we get. The design got changed once, and even that change is some time ago already. stop whining and bitching about. ppl act like they are the first humans on this forums lol

except fragger (cause quite common with helmet imo), all skins are pretty cool.

well the default augments should have done the same, but in order to work with the card design, better cards also means better augments. Well this is something that probably polarizes ppl. On the other hand I dont think augments arent op here. The fact that proxy is a pain in the ass even with default augs is the main problem^^

(.FROST.) #38

I think it makes totally sense to tie loadouts and abilities with specific skins.

#1 It doesn’t make sense to have a “SMG-Proxy” running around with a shotgun shell belt, etc…(though I actually don’t know if the devs have removed the belt from the SMG-Proxy)

#2 As an opposing player you can figure the loadout by identifying the class and the skin of your enemy(granted that you are an experienced player ofc  )

#3 I really like the idea of having to choose, instead of modding everything to your liking. By that I mean the satisfactory feeling when you get a card where almost everything fits your preferences. Brink went the other way around, and it was cool too, that you could’ve picked abilities and appearances, as well as factions and all, but I’ve really learned to enjoy this little cards metagame. I’m all for it, +1 for SD in this regard.

PS: Oh and I really like the skins on the founders mercs.

(DB Genome editor) #39

No they have not, the model mesh is the same for all loadouts, only the textures change.

Good luck with that: in the last build we had around a dozen loadouts per merc, but at most maybe 5-6 skins, so the same skin applied to more than one loadout. Of course if they were to reduce the number of loadouts, make them more themed and less random, and then link these themes to “brand name” skins, this could make sense. If you’ve played Borderland, think of the way you have a feel for how a gun will behave just from its brand name. Could be similar in DB if you could tell for instance that the mercs with the hexagon pattern skin are better than average at doing objectives, or the ones with the desert camo are tankier.

I can live with that for “generic” skins, and to some extent even for rewards, but how will that impact skins as a revenue stream? How often will the associated loadout discourage someone from buying a skin he/she would have gladly paid for if it could be applied independently? Skins associated with mediocre loadouts simply won’t sell, and those associated with above average loadouts will look like P2W, especially if that exact same loadout is not available as a free drop.

(.FROST.) #40

Ah, ok, I see. Thanks for the info, I really wasn’t sure. Would be cool though, if they’d tie a merc’s appearance(3D model) to his actual abilities and loadout.

Same as above; would be cool, if they’d tie specific skins(character textures), to specific loadouts. And yes, I’ve played Borderlands, and I’m absoultely with you on that. I’ve already “demanded” more themed mercs since a long time, even though the ones that are already in the game look quite cool.

I can see that too, but I could imagine, that aside from full loadout cards, that come with certain skins, they’ll also offer alternate “costumes”, that can be added to each loadout card independently. So first you would’ve to choose a loadout card and then you’d select a “color”.

Yet I’m still for set perks/strengths, so the devs would remain more in control of the overall balancing of the game, otherwise everybody would probably unlock/buy the same perks and weapons, just like they did in Brink. Which means 80% of the possible weapon/perk combos would never be played; but as it is now you would’ve five main parameters(main weapon, side weapon and three perks) for each merc, and at least 1-2 of those aren’t super great, in comparison to the other 3-4 “parameters”. So you would’ve to sacrifice one thing if you want another thing; you just can’t have it all(or at least that should be the idea behind it. Yet there are already loadout/perk combos out there, that are clearly superior to another loadout card from the same merc).
