Interesting that all the pics prophett posted are on the same map. Wonder if it is the lighting or post processing on that map specifically.
Enemy Merc Identification - We want to help you acquire targets!
This is a test right? SD starting with the lowest form of discernibility and then slowly bringing it up to a point that is playable. Is that’s what’s going on?
There were complaints about team ID still in older builds, so we wanted to improve it. When we started investigating we found multiple elements of lighting and shaders that were broken, so to fix it we started stripping those away and then are building them back up properly. It’s bad now because we’ve not completed that process yet.
That makes sense. Awesome.
Until that is completed though I think more prominent friendly identifiers will help a lot.
with my config the opponent team is black with a red outline. So i can’t spot everything well. Why not just add a option enemy red your team blue.
In addition to the issue of of being able to see against the background for me a major concern is also team identification.
For example if an enemy is in my sight and a friendly guy is standing behind him the IFF makes it look like he is on my team, can’t discern the unique skins at all.
Also if you round the corner at the same time you run through each other, again no way to tell what team they are on, but this time because you’re too close to see an IFF if there is one.
Basically if we could identify team by skin it would be much more preferable than relying on an IFF.
So far I have noticed it everywhere that red brick, red floor/ground is used. A lot of the red brick buildings on Trainyard also have this problem (i’ll post screenies when I am able to capture them). These buildings are quite small so when you are in them fighting it isn’t so bad, but when you are trying to shoot someone through a window at a distance, they are very hard to make out.
I believe that if a player choses to be inconspicuous then that should pay off. Moving slower, taking detours and not drawing attention to yourself should be a valid strategy. It’s already hard enough to pull that off without looking like a christmas tree with a whorehouse neon billboard on top.
The few servers in ETQW that had enemy indicators off (team still on) were amazing to play because hiding made sense. The extra challenge of picking out actual targets when flying an aircraft was also more fulfilling than blindly firing away at red arrows.
So while the current state clearly isn’t preferred (it’s also just incredibly ugly right now), I’m wary of jumping in with the ‘make everything ostentatious again!’ sentiment.
I want players shooting at players, not at the crutches that represent the players. It makes fights more layered, intense and intimate. And right now there’s more to it than just player models. The indicators and the noisy HUD in general also play a big role.
I still think team identifcation should be on your team mates and not the enemy… make it obvious who your mates are and make the enemies semi emmisive and the problem is solved >.<
(if only it was that simple…)
Fully agreed. Friendly indicators really vivid and clear, and enemy indicators gone.
In the more orange environments, like trainyard the enemy indicators even sometimes help the opponent blend in further.
Here’s some screenshots from a video i did this morning … By this time I think i’d upped the in game gamma to about 2.5 … the actual screenshots are from the video playback

Your hit indicator is huge! Do you know you can make is smaller?
Aye…I don’t usually play with it on…was just giving it a tryout along with a couple of other settings. I’ve dropped it down since then

I agree, link your cfg or at least tell us the two command lines and values you used to change the texture to flat and the color to washed out?
