Demo version

(DoubleDigit) #21

Do you think MW2 would have sold the same if no other call of duty game existed before it?

(Nail) #22

probably not, but I think the hype sold more

(Joe999) #23

the marketing machine sold everything. even other companies were too afraid to release a game during that release timeframe.

that doesn’t mean that the no-demo-policy is a good thing. take eg wolfenstein. that game had no demo either. i had to play through a broken game. ie i had to disable bobbing because the bobbing was absolutely insane. i couldn’t play more than 20 minutes until i got motion sickness. after some time i found a way to disable this crazy bobbing (reducing only wasn’t possible), but playing without was like you are floating like a ghost. for gears of war it was different. you can’t disable bobbing and it’s crazy as hell in that game. for my 60 euro i played 20 minutes, then dropped the game. when i complained, epic said i’d have to refer to microsoft. microsoft said i’d have to refer to epic. either way, they have stolen money from me. i learned my lesson. i didn’t even consider to get mw2. the game has no demo. so they’ll get no money from me.

or take eg golden axe beastrider. there were neither reviews out on game launch, nor was there a demo. i wanted to get the game, luckily i rented it. this is what i got:

i’ve seriously lost faith in the majority of the gaming industry

I didn’t say demos were bad, I just wondered why console players needed a demo when they can rent all the games they want for $10 a month.

(Joe999) #25

that’s easy to explain:

  • the way to the rental store: get the game, bring it back. usually the “bring it back” sucks
  • spend money on game rental plus when you finally buy the game you tried => the game costs more
  • renting is an unnecessary inconvenience if you want to try before you buy
  • the game has to be at the rental store. new games are very hard to get

where does renting a game cost $10 a month? here you pay 1,50 euro per day

btw, the new upcoming business model leaves renting out of question if you like a game. they leave levels out of the game which can only be accessed by a unique code which is valid only once

(H0RSE) #26

Gamefly you can have 1 game out as long as you want and it costs $15 a month. I think you can have up to 4 games out at once, but it costs more. No trips to the video store. They mail them to you.

[/QUOTE]

And the one who did (Future Mark) really regretted it.

well location…

here “EU” we dont have the luxury to rent a game thats relatively new, for just $10 a month.
it costs a that much for just one game a day.
While for me the waiting time is the main reason, and i just cant see brink added to the video stores rental games archive at all.
let a lone in a reasonable time frame…

(aimology) #29

Not bad for a game that was the only real big name game released in 2009 on every platform

(aimology) #30

I’m a face palmer.

i lost my faith in the game industry too. if they manage to put out a perfect title like left4dead they will milk you with a second part that is almost a mod for the game. this part will have content you hoped to get over the time for the first part wich was perfect gameplay wise but extremely short on the other hand.
today i was in the warehouse an i see call of duty m w 2 (name is way too long) there costing 60 €!!! i mean ok it got no bugs but COME ON! 60€ are the people NUTS??? for this game there is an excuse cause its bugfree but the other tons of crappy games that come out cost 50€ or something thats so ultra lame i cant explain it!!! it would take a extra thread to list all the bugged games that pissed me of the last years.

(GlobalWar) #32

No bugs? The whole IWnet thingy is a bug itself…It should be a new standard.

Next to lag, clipping, broken textures, z-fighting you can suffer from sever IWNetting.

IWNetting:
Failing to join a P2P game with ALL your friends after countless tries to combine parties with huge ping difference.

/me does not enjoy these “lost faith in gaming, all games suck” posts.
If there is ever a time to use the go outside line its to those kind of posts.

Gaming not entertaining you anymore? I think its time to stop and do something else, take up reading or going to the movies. You have allot of free time now.

+1 to iwfailnet, the amount of time its “succesfully merged lobbies” only to find all 4 members of the party in completely different lobbies… lol wut.
Dont get me started on the amount of failed to connect, lag, host migration fails timed out, cant connect to host, op shotgun.
The only reason i punish myself with it is because all the other games i would be playing instead ran screaming for the hills to release together… this year.

(CyburK) #34

dont worry there are plenty of things i do besides playing a game. but when i purchase one for about 50 € i want it to work. i mean if you go back to the store they will say: " sorry but they will come up with a patch and games that have been opened cannot be returned". hard to install and play without opening…

sorry about the cod thing i havent played it yet i was just guessing cause of part 1 :]

(DoubleDigit) #35

All in all, 2010 will be a great gaming year for me. Starcraft 2 (for which I don’t need no demo), Brink, Bad Company 2 and with a little luck Diablo 3, I doubt it though, Diablo 3 2011 for sure.

(hozz) #36

Just some random information from myself to SD:

I bought ETQW 100% thanks to it’s demo. Precisely I got the the 55€ SE version which could have been more expensive only on the moon or maybe in Australia (btw it was worth every cent!).

I went from
"Well ok let’s see what the old Doom 3 engine can do yawn, nothing better to do, downloads demo "
to
“ARRGGGHHHH bites fingernails waiting for the f**king release to happen but it’s still a week till 28th GNNNNNHHH WANT HAAAAVE”
half a day after first starting the demo.

And if it had even been the 1.4 demo or with even better accessibility like Brink surely posesses…

Pre-Release demo (Brink will be GOOD, you have nothing to worry - like 2 weeks before retail start makes ppl crave till madness) + proper advertising = games sold:wink:

(SockDog) #37

This man clearly talks the truth.

If you go with Steam I think the time limited demo would be good and then issue guest passes and freeplay weekends FTW after release.
