Curious about one aspect

(Weapuh) #101

Wow, it is quite a different reality you live in isn’t it? Is the sky blue there?
Nobody is suggesting doom other than yourself and imposing it upon other people where as I’ve clearly said
It doesn’t ruin the game of course. Nobody said it did, as most people are suggesting, just disappointing.
You’re just wrong if you believe it’s a non-issue, It’s just not a big one, and no one is making a bigger deal of it than you, so enjoy your peace pipe and kindly keep to yourself kthx.

yeah see my edit… it WAS made a big deal of people who thought it was a HUGE issue. You just assumed (like many do on here, not just yourself), that this is the 1st discussion on the subject… it rarely ever is.

(Weapuh) #103

Searched, didn’t find, saw the other one bout 30 minutes ago, laughed a lot, I much prefer this math oriented one.

I was never concerned for it being a game changer or even noticeable much of the time. I really think it (at any stretch of the imagination) could be detrimental to competitive play, a scenario of “we went 5 lights…” “we went 5 heavies” “now its an intermitent deathmatch… YAY” williy-flopping excitement ensues that would be worst case, and probably would be league rule enforced anyways, as well as the abilities.
So the odds of it being an issue are low, and that’s why I was “Curious” instead of “THERE NEEDS TO BE!!” and it was slightly “disappointing” rather than “CANCELLING MY PREORDER!!!”

Hope you now realize we’ve pretty much been on the same page the whole time.

(DarkangelUK) #104

Yeah I carried my mentality over from the other thread rather than actually grasping the tone of this one, apologies.

(Weapuh) #105

No prob its a mad mad mad mad world

(Shadowcat) #106

It would be (0< a+b+c+1 =< team size) with a b and c as positive integers. The quickest path to having all the classes is (1,1,1) and a+b+c+1 in that case would only be 4.

Honestly though, this whole thing has gotten out of hand, i mostly did it long hand to prove to myself that my 62.5% guess wasn’t far off. Found it amusing that my 10%-20% arbitrary guess turned out to be more correct than I would’ve imagined.

Edit:

That song STILL makes me think of gears of war. I personally thought the GoW commercial was better than the official music vid.

The very fact that the subject keeps coming up suggests that a decent number of people spotted a possible issue here. I’m hopeful that it’s resolved somehow in the game, or that the stats work out.

I’ll be paying attention in the game once it comes out to see how often I need/want to switch to a class which I can’t play to the fullest because I’m on the wrong character. If it’s rare, then it’s not a big enough problem to worry about. If it happens every 4 or 5 games, I’m going to take issue with it.

Or you could…ya know…just deal with your choices.

Especially since if we all spot it, it is likely that SD and/or testers saw this same problem.

Again I think most of this comes down to the fact that we don’t fully understand how builds are going to be. Im running on the assumption that I don’t think it is going to take as many points/abilities to reach optimal levels for a class as people think. However well see.

For the record his face is tattooed and covered in shadow. Not eye shadow.

@DA I think it’s a huge deal if a large enough percentage of players don’t share your/SD’s philosophy on classes and abilities. Maybe it’ll be no worse than ETQW, perhaps even better given the hunger for XP bribes. Yet there is always the chance it could be worse and the contradictory nature of encouraging investment in building a character and then expecting people to play with their character at less than peak is cause for some speculation on how it’ll motivate players.

(Mustang) #111

I think you are also assuming that all classes will be equally popular and that knowing a particular map is being played won’t effect peoples character choice

(Linsolv) #112

Mathematically, you have to. There’s no way to predict how those things with the knowledge we have right now.

(obliviondoll) #113

I mentioned that would influence things as well.

For now, getting stats for what classes will be more popular isn’t possible, though, so we’re working from the the most basic level - assuming equal probability.

I also allowed for only 10% of players to be the kind to willingly switch to a class they’re not suited to just to make up the numbers. I’m pretty sure that figure will be a LOT higher in practise.

(Linsolv) #114

I stand by my assertion that after people play for a little while people will mostly have 2 classes, with a decent number of 3-classes, and a small number of 4- and 1-class setups.

(Seyu) #115

You can’t change your abilities at the command post, right?

(Linsolv) #116

If you have more than 3 d-button abilities bought/selected, then I’ve heard suggestions that you CAN change between them. However you cannot change your ability spec at a command post.

(Shadowcat) #117

Each class can be equipped differently, but if you have 4 activated abilities for a class, i have heard that you cant change them mid-game. I can’t confirm that though.

So the moral of the story is, unless you use different skills for different maps on one character, there is no reason to invest in 3 different activated abilities for one class.

Even if you can change abilities mid game, it would be watering down your skill pool if you had more activated abilities than you can use at one time.

(H0RSE) #118

So the moral of the story is, unless you use different skills for different maps on one character, there is no reason to invest in 3 different activated abilities for one class.

So having mines, turrets, and flak jacket boost (3 different active abilities) as an Engineer is meaningless to you? Or sticky bomb, caltrops/smoke grenade and EMP grenade as Operative = meaningless?

(Shadowcat) #119

whoops, meant to say “MORE than 3”

fairly important correction, as you point out

(LyndonL) #120

That’s my thinking also. I plan to have 2 specialty customisations, and the other 2 people I play with frequently will do the same, so we should have every class covered.
