Crash after startup

(griffmiester) #41
Can you please all try the following:

[ol]
[li]Run Steam
[/li][li]Navigate to the Steam Store
[/li][li]Search for and navigate to the Agents of Change product page in Steam
[/li][li]If the page says You already own Agents of Change click ‘Play Now’ to start downloading the content.
[/li][li]Run Brink
[/li][/ol]

If the AoC Steam Store page says Add to wishlist, after following the steps described in this post, run Brink.
It says that I don’t own the Agents of Change DLC

Also, cos I’d previously tried the steps in the other post you linked, there was no copy of the file “brink agents of change dlc.ncf” to delete.

It’s still crashing when I attempt to start the game.

griffmiester, please confirm which Brink files you have in the following locations (screenshot is fine so long as you set the View to Details):

…\Steam\steamapps
…\Steam\steamapps\common\brink\base (specifically, the sdpk2 and sdmd2 files)

In addition to this, can you set the following, boot the game and grab the files produced:

Note to readers: Do not enable the below logfile setting for your game. It is specifically for crash debugging and can impact performance.

[ol]
[li]Go into your Steam Library, and right-click on Brink[/li][li]Click ‘Properties’[/li][li]Click ‘Set launch options…’[/li][li]Paste the following: +set logFileName “CrashOnBoot_$M.$D_$h.$m.$s.log” +set logfile 2[/li][li]Run Brink from Steam and attempt to produce the crash[/li][li]If you produce the crash, retrieve the logfile:[/li]
[li]Go to …\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata#steamid#\22350\local\base[/li][li]Find the file called CrashOnBoot_xxxx.log[/li][/ol]
[li]See if the crash also produced a minidump (MDMP) file[/li][ol]
[li]Go to …\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\brink[/li][li]Look for the most recently created MDMP file[/li][li]If it was created just now, send it through[/li][/ol]
[li]Post a link to the files here, or if you don’t have a way to host the files, send me a Private Message and I’ll give you an email address to send them to[/li]
Afterwards,

[li]Go into your Steam Library, and right-click on Brink[/li][li]Click ‘Properties’[/li][li]Click ‘Set launch options…’[/li][li]Remove +set logFileName “CrashOnBoot_$M.$D_$h.$m.$s.log” +set logfile 2[/li]
There was no MDMP Dump file in that location.

So I bought Brink yesterday, and after hours of trying to get it working I decided I would add my case to this list.
I bought it retail and tried installing twice via the disc. Decided it wasn’t working and downloaded via Steam, to which I got the same error.

When I start up the game, I briefly see a splash image before it disappears and nothing happens.
I have tried many of the things that were suggested online with no luck.

I have not bought the Brink: Agents of Change DLC.
I have followed the advice in this post.

From which country are you downloading Brink? Canada
In which country did you create your Steam account? Canada
In which language are you currently running the game? English
In which language would you prefer to run the game? English

I have an above average laptop I am trying to run the game on.
i7 quad core, graphics card is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 (with up-to-date 11.8 drivers), and finally triple buffering (openGL) is disabled.

Thanks, I hope I can get it working soon as I am looking forward to trying this game.

sorry crispy , but it still not work for me  and i have try the 2 way

There was no MDMP Dump file in that location.
Thanks for the info. Please can you confirm what it says in the DLC tab at:

Steam > Library > Brink > Properties

Additionally, does anyone who uses the same PC also play Brink and does own the Agents of Change DLC?

No one else uses the computer. There are no other Steam accounts associated with it.

(Crispy) #48

griffmiester, the error confirms the game is failing to boot when attempting to read a DLC file. You Steam account confirms you do not have entitlements for the DLC files. This is probably a relic of the free DLC weekend. Please attempt the following:

Delete the following files.

[ul]
[li]In …\Steam\steamapps[/li]
[li]brink agents of change dlc.ncf[/li][/ul]
[li]In …\Steam\steamapps\common\brink\base[/li][ul]
[li]zzzdlc000.sdmd2[/li][li]zzzdlc000.sdpk2[/li][li]zzzdlcenglish000.sdmd2 (you may need to delete other DLC language files if those have been installed, e.g. zzzdlcfrench000.sdmd2)[/li][li]zzzdlcenglish000.sdpk2[/li][/ul]
Now run brink.exe from …\Steam\steamapps\common\brink.

If that is successful, verify your Steam cache for Brink and you should have no further boot problems.

I couldn’t delete “brink agents of change dlc.ncf”, cos it already didn’t exist.
I deleted the other 4 files, and it’s working.

Thanks Crispy.

(Crispy) #50

Everyone else having similar issues should take the same steps.

I notice in the previous steps I mentioned here I didn’t ask the posters in that thread to delete zzzdlc000.sdmd2 and zzzdlc000.sdpk2 because it wasn’t necessary. In this case, it’s necessary to delete all the DLC files as indicated above, and as indicated in the stickied DLC troubleshooting thread.

(DeathByVoid) #51

I just deleted all the DLC files and my problem was solved!
I can finally run Brink!

Thanks!

(Ghorthor) #52

i have try with deleting the dlc files and it still not work for me

(Ghorthor) #54

it still not work for me

(greggymichael) #55

The language in steam settings are the very most important.

(Ghorthor) #56

i have french laguage , i have to switch it to english ?

(VomitSu) #57

Hi Ghorthor

Yes  The idea is to change language to force steam to download and install again the files. But the language itself isn’t the matter  I got the game in french and it works perfectly !

Look at older answers to see more details about what you could try

(tangoliber) #58

Update: I uninstalled and reinstalled Steam, and I was then able to start up the game again. Then I turned on the Steam Beta Update, which forced me to restart Steam. After that, I could no longer startup Brink. I actually did this right before the last time Brink started working. So, it is related somehow? I will reinstall Steam again, and not activate the Beta thing again.

Update #2: Oh wow… No need to uninstall Steam again. I just switched off Steam Beta Update and Brink started working again.

I’m getting the issue in the original post. The game was running great before. Now, it exits after the Brink logo against black background is shown, without any error message.

I downloaded Brink in Japan
I created my Steam account in Japan
I am running the game in English
I would like to run the game in English

I have not yet purchased the DLC.

 • I have tried re-installing, and I deleted the files listed that I could…though many of them did not exist, as I haven’t installed DLC.
 • I verified the integrity of the game cache after deleting the files.
 • I tried switching Steam to Italian, and later back to English.
 • I also checked that triple buffering was off on my Nvidia 540M.
 • I have updated my Nvidia driver to 280.26

(Ghorthor) #59

vomitsu , i have allready trying all i can find on this forum and what i have find on the web  but i ll retry, maybe it ll work

(Leethal) #60

I have been at it now for over 8 hours, downoaded brink twice updated ati drivers, tried reverting drivers etc.
Now trying this fix by re doing dlc and files as detailed.

Dissapointed that i paid 20.00 and have spent so much time on this when the gsme has been releaesd for So long…

The game developer bears a lot of the blame but Steam is the culprit - knowingly offering up a game with
Issues and then not giving a toss, I am tempted to bill them for my time when & if I get this working…
So farcthey are up for $400.00 for my time.

My pc is not a old one eitjer - Amd phenom 6 core 6gb ram and hd 5700 gfx.

Able to run everything but Brink :frowning:
